Marray v Murray...

So last night before we went to bed we stumbled upon the men's doubles final and watched transfixed as the wild card pairing which included a Brit (Jonny Marray) battled their way past the two Swedes who talked into their wristbands before every point.  No wonder the games took so bloody long with their ridiculous beam me up Scotty routine - like Dad said - they were Swedes for god sake so how many people were going to understand if they shouted "Servera den till sin vänstra" to one another?  Still Marray and Nielsen battled through and won - the moment when it actually dawned on them that they had become Wimbledon Champions was priceless.  Well done Marray and would we be saying Well done Murray in the men's singles - I had my doubts as John had said from the outset that Federer was on fire this championship.

It has become seriously hot again which should come as no surprise because it is July!  Fortunately humidity is lower this week but we are not sure why the weather station keeps showing rain maybe there is a storm somewhere if the puffy white clouds forming over the Troodos are anything to go by - either that or we had some extra specially damp condensation the night before.  John was up and out to give our neighbour a hand with a couple of jobs like installing a quieter extractor fan for the bathroom as they are concerned that the old one might wake us - it doesn't but it is kind of them to take us into consideration.  I was tackling the ironing - or at least the sheets from Debs bed - as we are expecting Bill and Wendy to stop over at some point when they are here.  Ironing in this heat is a nightmare - I shall soon have to adopt my Mum's habit of doing it in the early hours.

Gregoris from next door came round asking if the cat was in as he had something for him.  It transpires that he had found one of the tiny local field mice doing front crawl in his swimming pool and thought Chivers might like to play with it.  We politely told him that we would prefer it if our cats didn't as they may eat it and promptly set the poor little bugger free in the field next door - I hope it survived - it probably didn't.

You would have been hard pressed to raise any enthusiasm from Minnie Mou as she had sought solace on top of my ironing - not ideal but how can you get cross when she looks so bloody comfortable!  She wasn't there long - it must have been too warm because the next time I looked she had flopped onto the tiled floor seeking out a bit of cool.  Chivers was in his usual hidey hole - under the barbeque of the house next door hidden away by the vine that is growing over it.  At least we know where he is and will try and provide him with a similar bolt hole in our garden.

Anyway before too long Mum and Dad had arrived ready to watch the Men's Final - well Mum had, Dad was going to give it a stiff ignoring and sit outside under the gazebo.  As always they came laden with stuff - this time Dad was getting rid of his pressure washer which we gratefully accepted (think Conservatory, glass, lots of!).  Mum also had some throws she no longer wanted and having had to peel ourselves off of the leather sofa's on more than one occasion I thought I could find a home for them!

John was very quickly on bar-duty and thanks to the half bottle of Pimms brought up by Mum we got into Wimbledon mode ready to enjoy or is that endure the tennis.

It all started so promisingly with Murray breaking Federer in the very first game and it continued promisingly as he took the first set and should have taken the second but once there was a break in the match for rain it was all downhill from there.

Now I am no tennis coach but surely Ivan Lendl should tell Murray not to lob and not to do those dinky slow returns over the net and more than anything GET A FIRST SERVE OVER THE NET - I don't know what Lendl is getting paid but I would tell him that for free.

So no fairy tale ending to the tournament for Murray who blubbed like Gwynneth Paltrow when he was interviewed by Sue Barker - maybe he realised that that may well have been his best chance ever what with Nadal and Djokovic going out.
