Wednesday - Happy Birthday John and Happy Birthday Dad...

So today my Dad is 84 and John is 48 - palindromatic birthdays and we have worked out that this has happened every 11 years since John was 4!  So 04/40, 15/51, 26/62, 37/73 and now 48/84 let's hope they make 59 and 95!!

The morning started with a breakfast meeting with our neighbours Sharon and Sean and more gifts for John - they have been really kind and brought all sorts of things over for both of us.

John was particularly looking forward to the delivery of his birthday sander to add to his Makita range - he is hoping for the full set but having seen that there are over 130 to collect I think that will be unlikely!  Sharon and Sean gave him a couple of tool holsters so that when he is working he can have a power tool or his hammer about his person!  It made me laugh because he looked everso slighly like one of the Village People when he came out wearing it!

They also brought us both an England Rugby T-Shirt in readiness for the World Cup - the opening ceremony is Friday and England will be playing Fiji - we seem to have an awful lot of Welsh friends so this photograph complete with bed-heads was to show them that we are ready, willing and able - bring it on!!!

We were going out this evening to celebrate the two birthdays with Louise, Hywel and Louise's Mum Pat and we had booked to go to the Blue Olive at Coral Bay forgetting that they do not normally open on a Wednesday evening but were doing so just for us bless them.

Prior to that I had the small matter of lunch to get over.  After the disastrous meal two weeks ago at Palates in the village we had been invited to return to their taverna O Stathmos for a free lunch as a good will gesture.  I think it is fair to say that most of the Lunching Ladies would have preferred to have eaten in the courtyard at O Stathmos in the first place but Sylvia was keen to show off the hotel and the refurbished restaurant.  It all went horribly wrong and she served what was basically an inedible meal and was distraught.  Her husband Bambos then offered the meal today and although I really didn't want to eat too much I wanted to go and show that there were no hard feelings.

Today's meal was absolutely lovely and they pulled out all the stops although sadly Sylvia was not in evidence for us to tell her everything was fine.  The nine of us that assembled agreed that the meal was so good we couldn't not offer some money for it and although Bambos did not want to accept I told him to give mine to his boys if he wouldn't take it himself.

After a little rest at home we got ready to go out - we were picking up Mum and Dad so they could enjoy their evening.  As we set off we found our path blocked by the big black stallion that is 'covering' a mare in the field up the road.   We drove towards it slowly, it wouldn't move, we beeped our horn, it wouldn't move, we reversed back and then drove at it more quickly, it wouldn't move!

At this point the blue 4x4 that gets ragged around the village with about six youths inside (not one seemingly older than about 15) came up the road at about MAC2 and had to screech to a halt as the horse continued to stand its ground.  They obviously drew lots and pushed the youngest boy out who was charged with moving the horse on - rather him than us because John had previously had an encounter with this stallion who was clearly keen on defending its 'girlfriend'.  Poor youth looked rather nervous as he flapped at the horse but give him his due he eventually managed to get it out of the road which earned him a big fat BRAVO from me!  Just as a postscript when we returned home this evening at around 10.00 we nearly drove into it just outside our estate because in the gloom he was really difficult to see and was wandering around loose.

We had a fantastic evening at the Blue Olive, the food was superb and we arrived in time for their Early Bird deal - and you know how Yorkshiremen like a good deal!  Rebecca and Derrick had dressed the table and added a free bottle of nicely chilled Prosecco and even came with a little cake and candle at the end.  It is such a lovely little venue run by really really lovely people.  It rounded off this Birthday day very nicely indeed.
