Eye Eye

During the course of last night our conversations turned to eyesight - probably because I was telling Nicky and Mark that Mum was likely to be going in for cataract operations this week.  John was saying that at times his eyesight is not as good as it should be (i.e. his arms are no longer long enough!) and he got himself some off the shelf glasses to help - he next to never uses them but when he put them on last night Nicky made an amazing discovery that John and Ray Winston were, in fact, separated at birth!!!! and we have the photographs to prove it!!!

Nicky loves Charlie, because he is fat, cute and cuddly - at 5.30am this morning I could think of other words to describe him and cute and cuddly didn't feature in any of them.  First off he came into the bedroom, jumped all over the bed and then went to our bedroom door to scratch the hell out of it, not because he cannot get out but because that provokes a reaction from me and I get up to stop him and then he thinks he is going to be fed.  He was unlucky today as I picked him up and pushed his bulk out through the window and shut it behind him.  Ha-Ha Mr Fat Lad from Droushia - I win exept I didn't because he then ran round to the main door to the bedrooms and started flicking it with his claws so I reopened the bedroom window and called him in - this performance happened about three times before I gave in and got up and fed him because I wanted Nicky and Mark to have a good restful sleep.  I thought only Charlie was around but as I went into the lounge the other three were all snuggled up on the sofas taking advantage of the residual heat from last night's log fire.  Three little heads turned towards me bleary eyed and yawning!

John got up and rekindled the embers of the fire so that the lounge was toasty warm when our guests got up and we sat around the table having a leisurely crumpet breakfast with my home-made jams and preserves.  The four of us decided that we should put the next visit into the diary so that we have something concrete to work towards otherwise the year slips by and we haven't caught up - so next time is in February and that will be upon us before we know it.

We were having supper at Mum and Dad's this evening so once our guests had gone we settled down by the fire and watched Dunkirk.  I thought it was a good film, beautiful shot in an old fashioned way  - bit disappointed that Tom Hardy was in a flying helmet and goggles for 99% of his appearance though.

Mid afternoon we got the nibbles as our breakfast crumpets had faded long into the distance.  Nicky is a great cook and she had brought up for us to try one of her own home made pork pies.  John is a sucker for a pork pie so he was more than happy to be a guinea-pig for this recipe and to give his opinion.  It was delicious, maybe for us a little more pepper in the filling but then we do like peppery food and if we were to be ultra critical slightly less pastry on the bottom but apart from that perfect.

Thoughts were with my sister today, not just because she woke to find herself in the middle of what was a real winter wonderland outside but because she featured on yesterday's Saturday Live Radio 4 broadcast when she had recorded a story for their Thank You spot when she recounted a stranger's unexpected kindness when Richard was first diagnosed as being seriously ill and she thanked that person for their kidness.  It must have been a very hard thing for her to do as it is a difficult time for her and her family as Richard passed away on Boxing Day three years ago.  She sent me the radio clip to listen to and we were moved to tears.
