Weekend news...

We said goodbye to our neighbours on Saturday. I can't believe they have been here for three months but they have to return for some appointments.  They do not intend to be away for long but in the meantime have asked John to keep a watchful eye on the psycho-billy builder which would be ok if he actually turned up - it is now Monday and all weekend he has been conspicuous by his absence.

The weather has taken a real downward dip and unusually for June we have had rain, indeed last night it absolutely bucketed down and seemed to include some hail - great for the garden but not for visitors.  It makes no difference to us but is wreaking havoc on Lakis' building supplies.

Anyway John took Lakis, Argy and Kia to the airport on Saturday afternoon giving me a quiet hour or so to get food ready for Sunday which is Father's Day and will be the first without Dad.  John wanted to make it a bit special so we planned to take the plants up to the grave then take mum to the hotel for a drink as dad so loved going there before returning home for a meal and a game of Rummikub.

I had decided to keep the meal light so planned to have kebabs with yoghurt marinaded chicken, halloumi and grilled pineapple served with Cyprus toasties and coleslaw with poached pears and cream/ice-cream to follow.  We were to have a prawn salad on John's return before settling down to watch some footie now that the World Cup has started which will mean wall to wall football for the next few weeks!

Sunday is changeable and blustery before the heavy overnight rain but we manage to make our trip to the cemetery in sunshine.  It is still emotional but I am comforted by the fact that Dad's corner in a foreign field looks loved and cared for - which it is.

We de-camp to the hotel where last night they held a Lebanese evening catered for by Bassam and the kids - we were gutted not to be able to go because of the airport trip but apparently all went well - why should it not as they had the best teacher in Elena.

My lunch seemed to hit the spot too and the kebabs were a triumph and it was good to see mum tip up her bowl to get the last remaining drops of the poached pear juice - this is definitely a meal to do again.  Mum, John and I played a good-looking natured game of Rummikub before mum left thankfully before the rain came. Another weekend done and dusted.
