A morning with the School kids!!

Today we were taking our life into our hands and participating in a village clean with the school children - all of them!!!  They were split into two groups -  John and Les got the littlies along with two female teachers who, apparently, were too busy chatting to be aware of the movements of their charges.  Lynda and I, on the other hand, had a group who were kept firmly in hand by a lady who i think must be the deputy head as the head was not there today.  Lynda and I renamed her Herr Obergruppenfuhrer Skoupidia - she was not to be messed with!!!  The teacher, whose family runs the Last Castle, has had her baby and is back at work - in fact her baby is now five months old - how time flies!!

This week is a special week in Cyprus called "Let's Do It" and there are all sorts of cleaning activities going on.  The children had been provided with special bags to hold anything they picked up which could be recycled - even though there were pictures on the bags to help the children identify what could, and what could not, be recycled but this obviously didn't register with either the children or some of the adults so the bags had very mixed contents to say the least.  Still the whole 'recycling' thing is very new to Cypriots and particularly so in rural communities so we were just grateful to that kids took to the job in hand quite enthusiastically!!!  John looks like the 'Child Catcher' from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in this picture as they follow him and his bags!!

We were very lucky that the weather held out for us because around lunchtime it started to cloud over and look quite threatening.  We were made to feel very welcome and thanked by the staff and given coffee and biscuits for our trouble before we made our way back home and collected Kenna so that she and I could go out somewhere nice for lunch.

I had thought it would be nice to go to Oniros for lunch - we had seen that it had announced it was opening at the beginning of April but as we have had over 50% of the normal rainfall for April already and we are only 4 days in we arrived to find it was going to be delayed until next week which was a real shame as we don't have time to go next week.

We stopped to admire the view although Kenna was not convinced that the wreck added anything to it - I explained that it had become something of a landmark and it was one of those 'marmite' things - you either loved it or hated it.

It would have been a perfect day to have eaten lunch there, it was sunny and warm and the various structures were keeping the cool wind at bay but it was not to be so we resorted to plan 'B'.

Plan 'B' was to drive along the coast, past Sea You's which looked a bit windswept for lunch, and ending up by the Azia, parking up and heading for the Baracas Lounge which is in a great location although personally I don't think the service or food comes anywhere close to that at Oniros still we didn't have a great choice of what might be open by the coast and Kenna thought it was lovely and it certainly was very pleasant sat looking out to sea with some very welcome sunshine on our faces.

We rather over-ordered on our food - Kenna didn't realise that portion sizes over here are rather on the large side so we had ordered a meat platter to share but she fancied some Nachos and Breaded Prawns as a starter and they were both enormous so we didn't do the platter justice at all.  We boxed up the remainder and took it home for our supper which John was able to enjoy with us.  The platter was fine but the baguette could have done with crisping up and the funny shaped chips looked to have been frozen and with the potatoes over here being so fabulous I really don't think there is any need to serve frozen chips.

Before supper I took advantage of some peace and quiet to get my blog done.  My company is clearly riveting!  I was not so successful with my choice for this evenings' viewing - I had seen a film called Four Lions recommended but we sat through about 20 minutes and all agreed that we couldn't see what was funny about it - we probably didn't give it enough time but life's too short to sit through a film you can't fathom.

We were much more successful with the second choice - Madagascar 3 - because you really cannot go wrong with an animated film can you???  Will need to get my thinking cap on for tomorrow.
