Today we were taking up Wendy and Bill's invitation to visit them in Pissouri where they have their holiday home. It is ages and ages since John and I went to Pissouri. We once met a guy on a flight over to Cyprus who had a home in Pissouri and who invited John and I to join him and his wife Alison for the day which we did but that was years ago. We have been since then with Nicky and Mark when we tried ordering our meal entirely in Greek but failed miserably and we have also been to the Bunch of Grapes with Mum and Dad.
It was fairly miserable but dry when we got up this morning - I did my usual dressing in layers because you can never tell what the weather is going to be like and the forecast wasn't promising. Actually I am only three stone but it is just that I have to swathe myself in layer upon layer so end up looking like Michelin (wo)Man!
We left early because it gave us the opportunity to do some shopping down in Paphos and we weren't entirely sure where we were going plus as you all know by now we cannot be late EVER!!!
We took the opportunity to go to Pissouri on the old coast road rather than the motorway. Even though it was rather windy the sun began to break through the clouds and it was a very scenic drive. We stopped just before the birthplace of Aphrodite to capture the waves - it is so beautiful and rugged here that you could forgive yourself for thinking that you were in Cornwall.
Most people chose to go on the motorway so it leaves the coast road practically empty and there is so much to see. If you are looking for somewhere to stop there is a huge stretch of unspoiled beach and picnic areas that have now been established.
John is so fantastic because he is happy to stop and let me get out and take photographs. He is very supportive of me and encourages me to continue with the blog even though sometimes I think I will drop it down to just a couple a week but the pressure is on knowing that this is the last thing that Wendy reads before she goes to bed!
I have always thought that the rocks of Aphrodite are stunning and have decided that we will take Vix and Laura providing the weather is good - legend has it that if you swim anti-clockwise around the rock three times at sunset, Aphrodite will ensure you good health and a glorious sex life! Good health I would love the glorious sex life I already have!!!
We arrived at Pissouri with a little time to spare but as we were uncertain as to the exact location of the taverna we didn't stop in the square which is lovely and definitely somewhere that we think we will go with Vix and Laura when they are over. It will be good for them to see a different part of the island and let's face it, it really isn't that far to travel! The only trouble is that when you live on a small island your boundaries start to shrink!
How beautiful is this view of Pissouri and the coast?
How green it looks at this time of the year and how lovely to see the sun shining after the last few days of rain and hail. There are seasons here in Cyprus that with a little bit of rain just brings everything to life.
The location of the taverna is absolutely idyllic and as we arrived early we decided to take a walk along the beach to take some photographs and to collect some pebbles to go on the hearth.
It was so lovely to get the cobwebs blown away and the sun was actually quite warm so we enjoyed our stroll on the beach.
We did the friendly thing and took a photograph of some holiday-makers from Scotland who wanted a snap of the two of them on the beach and we had a chat with them whilst we waited for Wendy and Bill to arrive.
We didn't have to wait long before the Bailey's pitched up and we went into the taverna for lunch. It has an indoors and an outdoors and a midway area which is a sort of conservatory but with plastic walls and windows so we sat in there. Big mistake - in my Michelin Man ensemble I was grossly overdressed and had to start stripping off but there was only so far that I could go and keep my dignity but boy was I hot - in the end we moved outside but how lucky were we to be sitting outside in the sunshine in January overlooking a really wonderful bit of coastline? Days like today make me appreciate the fact that I no longer have to drag myself off to work every Monday.
After lunch we were invited to Wendy and Bill's house. They have a really lovely home with some of the most stunning views you could wish to have. They are lucky that being so high up they will not be affected by any future development that might happen in front of them. Wendy says that she is uncertain whether it is a house that she would want to live in permanently - I could - but we do understand what she means about having more external space to give her and Bill something to do.
Time flew by - John and I can't believe how easy we have found their company and we are pleased that they have already booked to return for two weeks in April so we will undoubtedly see them again then and the way time flies over here that will come round sooner rather than later!
We left a beautiful still late afternoon in Pissouri and hit rain as we entered Paphos. I took on board the tips I had read about taking photographs of lightning and used them to capture the traffic as we went through the city.
On arriving home it looks like it has been fairly dry up in Droushia today. Everything was fine with the cats happy as sand boys when we arrived home and Chivs had retained his new collar thank goodness so he was able to get in and out.
I have had an email from my sister today to say that she and Richard and Elena and Andy are coming out in May with their friends Vanessa and Colin and possibly some of the other children depending upon their commitments.
That will be great particularly as this time they are hoping to find a villa to rent up nearer to our neck of the woods.
