Extended Birthday Celebrations...

My friend Nicky, whose birthday is the week before mine, has just had a four-day long celebration. How very rock 'n roll that sounds, four days of excess!!  My birthday, on the other hand, was rather more easy listening than rock 'n roll!  After our lovely day yesterday John and I managed to stay up until 10.00pm then today my hedonistic lifestyle involved cleaning and washing!  Still tonight a group of us are going out to Voukani for a meal so at least I am having two days of celebration.

I could not have asked for a more beautiful day for my birthday with temperatures rising gradually both inside and out and low humidity which is a bonus.  The weather brings promises of the summer to come when we will all be moaning that it is too hot - still once a Brit always a Brit - what else would we be moaning about?  We are very hopeful that the real worst of it is behind us and that when Laura arrives in two weeks it will at least be settled.  We have the next two weeks to get ready for her and we have a number of maintenance jobs that need doing but as they are outside jobs we do need it to be dry.

We were given a taste of how warm the conservatory is going to be as, even today with no roof on it, I opened the windows to get a bit of a through draft going!  We cant wait for it to be finished now and our neighbour Charalambous came over to take at look at progress.

The sunshine galvanised us into action.  John had a number of little jobs he needed to complete before the glass arrives and he also wanted to prune some of the trees down to a single trunk as they are getting a bit overcrowded.  I got a cleaning head on (which is most unusual) and before long every room was in chaos!  Hopefully we are getting to grips with dealing with the cement fungus that blows the plaster in places and with the patches of condensation mould that appear in the kitchen - sounds lovely doesn't it but it is a fact of Cypriot life that their house-builds are not what we are used to.

The weather may be improving but there is still snow on the Troodos although less now than last week.  I wonder how long it will be before it has all gone?  John and I are already laying bets on the date when we have to put the fans on in the bedroom - I have gone for 27th June - based on nothing - it was just the first date that came into my head!

I thought you might like to see my birthday present from John - ever the romantic!!  I have to say though that it is quite possibly the best clothes prop a girl could ask for and makes a huge difference as my washing is now no longer scooping the floor!  I know that tomorrow will be a day of ironing but really that is no hardship and we are going to have clean fresh linen on the bed.

On the subject of beds we have reached a major milestone here in Droushia as we have been using both duvets of our mix and match duvet combo on the bed.  The total of 15 togs has gone, there is now seriously reduced toggage in the Wiseman bedroom as the 4.5 has been consigned to storage and we now only have 9.5 to cover us - well that and a bloody great bedspread!  John insists that the bedspread is only there because the cats like to sleep on the bed but I know that he loves it!

Vicki told me that she was worried because the other day I managed a post with no mention of the cats at all. How remiss of me!!!  Cats are fine.  Minnie Mou has taken to sleeping slap bang in the middle of the sofa so there is no room for anyone else and shoots you a filthy look if you try and nudge her over.  She is turning into quite a chunky-monkey - nothing to do with the copious amounts of treats and nibbles and wetfood that John tempts both her and Chivers with!  This is neither good for her figure nor her bowels it would appear as she can suddenly up and move leaving behind a very un-girlie like fragrance!

So to this evening then eight of us went to Voukani to celebrate my birthday.  John and I (John taking photo), Mum and Dad, Jane and John, Janice and Ray.  Poor Dad tripped over a black umbrella stand on his way in and went a cropper - he bruises so easily nowadays that we were quite worried but he appears to be ok.  Mum has had a bad back for a couple of days but seems to be improving.

The food at Voukani was excellent value and Vix you will be pleased to know that the Lasagne was every bit as good as when we had it for lunch the other week.  Our three course meal was a set price of €13.50 and the choices were excellent.  I had pate followed by lasagne but was so full I couldn't manage a pudding which was a shame as they are handmade by Shirley and fantastic.  Plus it was really lovely and warm in there - a little too warm for all my layers!

I have had a lovely birthday - the first of many in Cyprus I hope!
