Rush Visit to Vets...

As you will know, if you read yesterday's blog, I had the misfortune to step on (and kill) a tarantula last night.  The squidgy gunk that seeped through my toes left me quite traumatised.  I felt physically sick and didn't sleep too well as a result.

When we did get up we took a spin round the garden which is full of colour at the moment, colour and wildlife, the wildlife being a real temptation to the cats.  If you look closely at the middle of the photograph above you should be able to see a Praying Mantis.  I really like these insects - so do the cats so we keep finding their wings and nothing else laying round the garden.  Anyway at that time of the morning all seemed fine so we went down to Latchi to finalise the boat trip arrangements and to pay the balance of the money and then to Polis to get food in as we are doing Sunday lunch for Mum, Dad, Aunty Joyce and Uncle David and then feeding them again on Tuesday along with Kaye and Co - so 13 people in all and believe me when I say Kaye and Co can eat!

Latchi is looking particularly beautiful at the moment.  Not too many tourists so that the beaches are packed to the gunnels and at this end of the island there are plenty of beaches to chose from.  The new blue umbrellas and blue sunbeds mirror the colour of the sea.  We called by AquaPlanet at the Porto Latchi end of the Marina and spoke to Sophie about the boat hire.  All was good - we assemble at 9.00am on Saturday and off we go for around 4.5 - 5 hours up to the top left hand corner of the island to sample the delights of the blue lagoon.

We then continued on to Polis to complete our shopping and to stock up on half a cow (as I am cooking Stifado on Tuesday) a mound of chicken (I am also cooking my Moroccan Chicken with Preserved Lemons on Tuesday) and half a pig as I am cooking Piquant Pork for Sunday.

We returned home to find that Chivers had developed a rather sticky eye and a nasty limp.  All sorts ran through our minds because out here where we live his biggest danger is something poisonous and as there had been a tarantula in the house last night we didn't know whether this was the culprit.  John suddenly turns into a character out of All Creatures Great and Small and decided that his front paw was most definitely swollen and there appeared to be a bite mark on the joint.  We didn't think it was a snake as he didn't really show much sign of discomfort but you just cant be too careful so we arranged to take him to the vets as soon as they could see him and this meant keeping him in for an hour.  He seemed a little sleepy but then he probably sleeps most of the day anyway.  Whenever he tried to put weight on his foot he limped and when sitting he held it in a pitiful manner.

As we have not yet organised another vets for him we took him back to the scene of his Great Escape.  He hyperventilated and stressed all the way down there.  To cut a long story short his temperature and bloods came back normal although he STILL has enlarged lymph glands.  So one anti-inflammatory injection, one anti-biotic injection, one blood test and one bill for €50 later we packed him back in the car and took him back home - he cried and panted and hyperventilated all the way home then promptly jumped out of the basket ran indoors and there was no sign of any limp, on one hand we felt relief and on the other somewhat lighter in the wallet department!  Minnie Mou must have realised that something was afoot - or should I say apaw because she rushed to give Chivers a kiss on his return.

Satisfied that he was OK we were happy to leave the two of them and go down to Paphos to meet up with all the family and extended family for a meal at Gabors.  This is a favourite with Mum and Dad and is certainly a little more 'refined' dining which can make a welcome change from hearty taverna fayre.  The three course set menu is a winner and as I was relieved of driving duties went down very well with a glass or two of our favourite wine.  Our meal was paid for by the Thomas/Godfrey clan as a thank you for everything we had done towards making their holiday a success so that was very kind of them.

Our meal was topped off with a complementary drink - orange liquer for the girlies and a warmed brandy for the boys.  As John was driving I got both and mixed them in the same glass making a sidecar - not had one for years and have to say thoroughly enjoyed it.

We had an uneventful drive home - both cats were waiting for us - not a limp in sight and no little gifts of their latest kill lying on the doormat.  We had an early start the next day as we were being picked up at 8.30am so I got a few bits together, John made a list of what we wanted to take on the boat and having had a restless night's sleep last night retired to bed.  It was hot in fact we had to have the fan on for the first time this year - did I get my good night's sleep?  Well that is another story...
