The Eagle has Landed

This morning it was just last minute preparations for Hazel's impending arrival - we are everso slightly excited putting it mildly - it has been 6 years since she was here last.

As a vegetarian and lover of Halloumi we could think of no better place to get some fresh but up in the village where I got two for Di and two for Kim vacu-packed there and then so she could take it home with her.  There were two other people in the shop who engaged me in conversation telling me that they had traveled two hours from near Kakopetria to get the 'golden' milk of Droushia which is, according to them, the best on the island and they do this because they make Trachana with wheat which they source from some other village and which they consider to be the best.  It transpired that they were actually from the village of Kambos which is the family home of Argy!

We were taking thecheese directly round to Kim and Steve in Polemi.  Although they have a week left of their three month holiday they leave just after Hazel and so we were uncertain as to whether we would get together again.  It is good to see Steve looking so much better than he has done.  They still want to pack in as much as they can on their remaining week and are themselves venturing up to Kakopetria at some point.

We sat outside enjoying the shade and watching the swallows dip in and out of the swimming pool narrowly avoiding the hornets which were taking a drink.

At 11.00am Steve declared that the sun must be over the yardarm somewhere and Kim cracked open a bottle of Tsangarides red for her and I to enjoy what might be our last tipple together until the next time.  I am not used to such an early start on the vino!

Their accommodation this year has been stunning with so many lovely pieces of furniture just haphazardly dotted around but this is unlikely to be where the Haslam's return, if they do, next year because the owners have opted for a long term tenant rather than having a string of short term lets.  The same thing happened last year with the villa in the orange grove so they will have to start looking all over again.

We returned to do the last minute plumping and it would appear that I have a new cushion on the sofa which is considerably more furry than the others although they are bad enough!  Charlie resolutely refused to move so I left him there because at least I knew where he was and he wasn't up to mischief.

We left for the airport in time to stop at Bona Mare for a drink and something to eat before Hazel arrived.  It had been our plan to stop there until about 20 minutes after we saw her flight land.  It had been due in just before 8.00pm but was going to be delayed so it seemed an ideal place to while away an hour or so until we realised that they were setting up for a 'turn' which was advertised as being a drag artist who we had seen once before and didn't rate so we decided to cut our losses and leave just before he started preferring to sit it out in the relative calm of the picnic area in the forest!

This turned out to be a good move as it was quiet there and we were able to see the flights as they began to come in.  First of all was a Thomson flight and then one with a tailfin logo we didn't recognise and then the unmistakable livery of Squeezyjet.

With three flights all landing much the same time we didn't rush to get into arrivals as we reckoned that the little man who is the baggage handler would have his work cut out!!!

It was chaos at the airport but then that is unsurprising for a Saturday towards the end of July - the once consolation was that we were rewarded with the most fantastic sunset as we approached the airport terminal buildings.  This augers well for tomorrow and Hazel's first day when, hopefully, she will not repeat the sunburn episode of her last visit.

Her flight was marked as having landed when we got into the building and it was then just a question of waiting for her to come through - to be fair it really didn't take too long and before we knew it we were reunited!  I know she will not thank me for this hastily taken photograph but it is so lovely to see her again and although it was only a couple of weeks since I saw her in Yeovil we still managed to stay up until the wee small hours sitting outside under the stars catching up.  I know this week is going to fly so I want to make sure we enjoy every second and that she has the best time ever.

Just remembered that it was only a few minutes into her trip before we had our first Hazelism - I said to her that it was a shame she had not been here last Friday because we had had a fantastic night at the Jersey Boys - she asked if they were the transgender strippers - confused I had to explain that they were a Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons tribute act!!!
