Buggies v Old Town

Today John and his family were having a whizzy day out on buggies with a lunchtime stop at the Last Castle which is always a favourite with visitors.  John had sorted out a route taking in all sorts of small villages and places of interest before and after eating which would take up most of the day.  I on the other hand had arranged to go down to see Mum and try and help her find something for her neighbour Effie's big birthday which is coming up.

Mick came early to pick John up and I set off for my trip down to Mum's stopping first at Peyia to do my recycling and to have my first encounter with local cats.   We had never encountered many ginger cats back in the UK but over here I would reckon they are just about the most dominant colour.  Billy Big Balls in the front of this picture emerged out of a bin where he had been grazing his way through last night's takeaway leftovers.  He looked to be in pretty good condition for a stray so maybe he did actually belong to someone.

Having done my recycling I set off down the by-pass as I wanted to call into the big Phillipos supermarket to see if I could find the cat treats that Chivers seems to like - he is so picky with his food at the moment we like to make sure he has something he likes.

Fortunately Phillipos was both empty and had the treats I wanted so I managed to get them before heading off along the coast road to call into the smaller of the two Ikoagora shops in search of the Lick-e-Lix things that Chivers also likes.

I had a second cat reception of the morning - I had to beat a hasty retreat because I thought this lot were going to mug me of my supply of Lick-e-Lix and by the way to anyone reading and wondering exactly what I am on about these are squeezably yoghurt treats for cats which Chivers LOVES and which are available in Tesco back in the UK should anyone like to parcel me up some and send them over.  I am worried that Ikoagora might stop stocking them and then poor Chivvy-Chivs will be bereft.

After a quick haircut with the lovely Lumi who squeezed me in this morning I set off for Mum's and we decided to go to the Old Town to see if we could find a nice cross and chain for Effie and some material for me to make mum a summer dress.

We had immediate success at the first jewellers and found a pretty and simple cross and chain which we thought would be suitable and then almost next door we found a material shop where we were able to find some nice light and non-creasing fabric so that when I get a minute I can have my first go at making a summer dress from a pattern in about 40 years!  Stopping off for coffee in one of the Old Town's new and trendy cafes brought about cat encounter number three - this colony of cats were super cute, a bit skittish but clearly looked after as there was evidence of water and food around.

I like the look and feel of the Old Town although whether there is enough variety in the shops to draw in customers and get them to part with their money is anybody's guess but there is a great mix of old and new and I particularly like the street art which is all over the place and which you just 'come across'.  Today I found this donkey - he was tucked around a corner by the colony of cats.

It was hot today and there were plenty of tourists in evidence so the place had a great buzz.  We decided to try one more time to locate the shop which used to belong to friends Rula and John and which used to be the largest one selling table cloths and was inside what I would have guessed was the original market building from years ago.

The market has changed beyond recognition and it much larger than it used to be.  Try as we might we cannot find the shop - we think that the indoor part of the market where there shop used to form one wall has been completely rebuilt and replaced with this courtyard with shops all round.  As I say it has changed so much we cannot be sure but having walked up and down we couldn't find them which was a shame.

Mum needed to post a letter so we headed off for Kato Paphos and a spot of lunch before returning back to Emba where I sorted out a few things for Mum before heading off home.  I had planned to get some ironing done but by the time I had gone down to Latchi to pick up John then gone to Paps to get the BBQ food for Friday I had lost the desire to do it.  In fact we had an early night, we have a full on day tomorrow as we are getting up early and going to visit our friends in Spilia.
