Away day

We were having a day down in Paphos today, or at least part of the day.  This will be the first time we have left Charlie for any length of time since his accident but we had organised with an electrician to meet at Mum's so that we can get a Cat 5 ethernet cable from the lounge to the sunroom so that the internet is as stable as possible so that the TV is more reliable.

We sorted the cats hoping that they would be ok whilst we were out and took the opportunity to run a couple of errands en route to Mum's.

Since Charlie had his accident we have been making sure that he has been warm and in the evenings have had the gas fire lit.  It isn't that cold at the moment so the gas fire warms the room pretty well and it looks lovely and feels cosy.  We are aware though that the forecast isn't too good this week so we are preparing ourselves for having to light the wood burner.  The woodburner has had a complete overhaul this year but no-one seemed to have any smoke pellets to enable John to test the seals so we called in to AA Homeflame to see if they had any.

AA Homeflame not only does woodburners it also sells specialist wood products and I was really taken by the wooden sculpture which is in the entrance to the showroom - not sure if it is all driftwood but it looks like it and it is for sale - at a price!!!  There were some lovely things there if you were someone for whom money is no object so that's not me then!!

The guy didn't have any smoke pellets to hand but promised there would be some at the shop if we called in on our way home and he was true to his word and even better he didn't charge us for them.

It was a lovely autumnal day with some wispy clouds and warm sunshine and for some reason the Mesoghi Avenue was really really quiet.  We had a list of places we wanted to try and call into whilst we had the opportunity like the Smart Shop and Cycleband and Lidl.  In Cycleband we picked up some cheap Australian Wine called Wallaby Creek.  We love our local wine from the Vasillikon Winery but sometimes it is nice to have a change of flavour and at a few euros a bottle if it is awful  will just have to make a lot of stifado!!

We had a little wander around Lidl today.  Although we go down to Emba regularly we are generally going to Mum's or pickleball so only call in if we need something in particular and that is a rare thing as generally Mum will go and get whatever we need if she is able to.  Today we threw caution to the wind and went in for a look around.  We treated ourselves to some more wine - this time a Chilean Malbec which was on offer.  We do like a drop of wine with our meal and apparently according to the paper today if you consume chocolate and drink red wine you should live longer!!  We just take the view that if we make our evening meal a bit of an occasion sat at the table with a glass of vino it doesn't really matter what we are eating.

We had lunch with Mum before she went off to pickleball.  She is concerned about Fred who went for a checkup at the vets on Monday because he is putting on weight even though he isn't eating a huge amount.  The vet has told her that as a sedentary middle aged house cat his metabolism means that he doesn't process his food efficiently and so runs the risk of excess fat adhering itself to his liver which ultimately will kill him.  Fortunately she has found this out now so has the opportunity to make changes to his diet and lifestyle to make sure he lives as long as possible although this is clearly worrying her.  The vet will sort out his diet so we have to find ways of getting him some exercise whilst he is still in the house and this is not going to be easy.  We got some boxes for him to play in although he was not overly impressed at their arrival.  Mum has to try and get him to work for his food which is going to be a bit of a battle!  Nothing is going to change overnight but we all have to persevere for Fred's sake.  We have suggested that Mum gives him more of the bungalow to explore and that she moves his litter box so he has to walk further to find it.  Small changes but hopefully effective ones.

We started to tackle the cable issue and Mum has bought herself a second DVD player which needed to be set up for her.  Why is it in this day and age of wireless and bluetooth connectivity that all homes seem to have a snakes wedding lurking behind a cabinet somewhere??  John tried to get to the bottom of the conduit to the roof before Roger the Electrician arrived and found out that the job was not going to be as straightforward as we had first hoped.  Ain't that always the bloody way????  Roger managed to get all the trunking sorted today and is going to return on Friday to install the cable.  John will go down on Friday to see the job completed and have lunch with Mum and then go to pickleball - I can't go as I am on a three day weaving course this week!!!  We are really pleased with Roger's work so far - he is very neat and tidy and that is important when you are making changes to a rented property.

By the time Mum returned home we had the DVD set up and more than half of the ethernet cable job completed and I had made some toys to try and get Fred to play!!!  I know Mum is desperate to ensure Fred has the best life possible.  We just need to reassure her that it is going to take time to make changes but make changes we must because it is in his best interests.

Good news tonight Mum says that Fred has jumped up to get this food - the vet wants him to work for it rather than just have it put down for him.
