John's little trip back to the UK reminds me of how my life used to be when he was working away - I got used to my own company and today rather enjoy having the luxury of 24 hours stretching ahead of me to do exactly what I want. Having said that I will be so glad to have him back on Thursday!!!
So today being Saturday I enjoyed what, for me, is a lie-in before partaking in a little light breakfast of crumpets and tea whilst deciding how to spend my time. I have Mum and Sue coming for lunch tomorrow so there were a few items I wanted to buy fresh which meant a trip down to Polis but apart from that my TTDWJIA list is just about finished save for treating the wooden uprights in the conservatory which I did first thing.
I stopped off at the post office to check the post and had a couple of items for me and a letter for Rob. I called in to the cemetery to check on Dad. It was somewhat flooded after the rains we have had over the last couple of days but Dad's plot is still good - the plants seem to ensure that it remains relatively untouched by the elements thankfully.
I called in to drop off Rob's post, not wishing to disturb his Saturday which I know is precious to him being an avid football fan. Today is a big game for the Blades - an early kick off at Leeds which is a crunch match and one which I will have to follow if my heart will allow!!!
The view from the Veaseys was spectacular this morning because we had some very welcome sunshine. Enough to encourage me to put out a load of washing which proved to be a mistake as no-one had told Droushia that Spring is in the air and so later in the day, just as it would have been more or less dry, the heavens opened and it was wetter than when I put it out - I decided to leave it there as tomorrow is forecast to be fine - hopefully!!!
All traffic to and from Polis is currently being detoured through Droushia which makes it a little busier on the roads than normal and it means that you have to go down the hill towards the Ditzimin museum where Philippos's Donkey is taking advantage of the lush and plentiful green. Travelling down has highlighted a need for a village clean - the road is dreadful with litter all over the place. If the weather turns more settled I will plan one for the end of April - we have a clean with the school children at the beginning of April but it wont venture down that far.
I decided to take the scenic route into Polis turning off before Prodromi on the back road which brings you in near to where I used to go for Greek Lessons with Sam. Here there are rows and rows of bee hives and today there was actually a man in full gear doing whatever it is that they do with the hives. I didn't venture out of the car, erring on the side of caution should the bees be super active!!
We really do have some glorious countryside around us and even now, after 8 years, I still feel incredibly lucky to be living somewhere that is so beautiful. Soon we will be commenting on the fact that everything is brown and in danger of catching fire. In fact I can remember those hills in the distance being ablaze one year but now it is impossible to see where that took place. Nature has a wonderful way of healing itself and coming back as if nothing happened.
I did my shopping - not much to get so it was an easy trip and at the check-out bumped into one of my regular readers Jan who has returned to Droushia with her husband for one of their regular trips. Last time they were here I called in and had a marvellous piece of ginger cake which reminded me that I have not, as yet, tried that recipe so will have to rectify that in due course but tomorrow will be a banana cake for Mum as I know she likes it and I have four bananas in the fruit bowl ripening nicely.
On my return I had planned to do some gardening but this is when the storm came so that went out the window.
In my post was a late birthday card from my lovely friends the Allan Family. I shall most definitely try and catch up with them when I return to the UK briefly in May for a wedding.
Tommy and Sally are the couple who came for a long weekend the November before last and flew into Larnaca thinking that was our nearest airport! It is Sally's birthday tomorrow - she is a fellow Piscean and I remember the first time we socialised with her was on her birthday many years ago when they held a barbeque in March in Yeovil. It was, as I remember, a chilly day but parties at the Allans were legendary and I seem to remember ending the day singing karaoke in her dining room. I also remember being very thankful that we only lived next door but one when it came to staggering home after one or two or even three drinkies. I think this could possible be about 20 years ago as it was before they had children and their eldest Freddy is now a strapping young man who towered above me when I saw him last year!!
I spent the remainder of the afternoon prepping for our lunch tomorrow. We have planned to meet in the Droushia Heights for coffee first so I wanted everything to be as ready as it could be on our return so that we aren't eating at midnight.
The carnation in the vase which was given to me by the petrol station on International Women's Day (which was a week ago last Wednesday) still looks as fresh now as it did then. I haven't done anything special with it save stick it in the vase with some water.
Whilst prepping I kept one eye on the football match. It was epic to say the least. In the first half I think it would be fair to say that Leeds battered Sheffield United but thankfully weren't able to score a goal. I know John would have settled for a draw at the outset but that was looking doubtful as Leeds threatened to score time after time.
In the second half I am guessing the Blades returned to the pitch after a severe bollocking by Chris Wilder and looked much better opposition and then miraculously they scored a goal. Hanging on they defended superbly and thanks to a moment of madness by the Leeds goal keeper who got himself sent off played against 10 very determined Leeds players but held on even after nearly 7 minutes of added time. My heart was in my mouth until the final whistle was blown - John was watching with our friend Mike - god knows what the noise and language was like coming from that little corner of Yorkshire but I can put money on the fact that they will have celebrated this victory in style.
