It's a funny old world...

It's a funny old world sometimes.  Things just happen out of the blue which take you by surprise.  I know there is a lot of bad press about social media but just sometimes it is the most wonderful tool for getting people together...

...We have a local hospital in Polis with an A&E Department - John and I are fortunate enough not to have had to use it although I did go there a couple of times when Elena was ill.  Stuck out on a limb in this corner of the island it is literally a life-saver for some.  Recently its future was in doubt and demonstrations were organised to try and ensure its future.  It suffers from the fact that it is so far away from any 'life' and, apparently, the doctors are paid less there to do the same work as they might in Paphos.  Only the other weekend there were insufficient doctors to be able to man the hospital which is such a shame.  Rumours abound that it will close and that will be a very sad day for our community.

I administer several social media sites - one of which is dedicated to Droushia and another encourages people to ask anything they like about the Polis and Latchi area - like what times the banks are open or where the recycling centre is or who might be good for plumbing.  Through the latter I was contacted last night by someone who has been coming to Polis for years.  He is a paramedic and his partner is a doctor and what is more a Greek speaking doctor.  They are relocating to Polis and his partner wants to find out if it would be possible to be a doctor in Polis hospital - he doesn't want to go anywhere else.  The question was did I know who he might contact...

...WHAT!!!  OMG this just might be the answer to our local hospital's prayers, someone who speaks both English and Greek and is a qualified doctor who actually wants to work locally.  I immediately put him in touch with Dr Marios at the hospital and now have my fingers very firmly crossed that something can be sorted out, who knows?  if it can then I will feel I have been everso slightly instrumental in securing the future of the hospital for a little while longer at least.

It is with some sadness that I realised I could hear the bee eaters today.  The photograph is not mine - I do have some but nothing like as clear as this.  The fact that I could hear them and their distinctive call means that they are migrating back to wherever it is that they spend their winter.  It is a signal that Summer is over and we are moving into Autumn - there is definitely a change in the weather and the evenings are much cooler and much damper than they have been.

Today we had been invited to have a late lunch with Mum's friend Lillian.  Although she lives in Peyia she is on the outskirts and on our voyage of discovery in finding her house we were caught up in a traffic jam of goats or shoats or sheep or geep - we can never be quite sure!!!  Anyway with only one little wrong turn we found her house and enjoyed a lovely afternoon with her.

Mum met Lillian when they were both dining alone one evening in the winter at Tweedies.  Like Mum, Lillian is fairly recently widowed.  Anyway although there is a bit of an age difference they seem to hit it off well and so we had Lillian up on a Sunday with Mum a few weeks ago and this was the return match and I think it is something we will try and do every couple of months.  It is actually nice for us to have a four around the dining table, it makes the conversation flow and it is good for us all to meet new people.  Lillian has just come back from the UK and it is incredible that she spend quite a bit of it in the West County and actually took the train to Yeovil Junction at one point!

It was also great not to have to cook and the meal was lovely.  We had some beautifully ripe melon to start and then a slow cooked beef dish with fabulous roast potatoes and carrots and beans and then a scrummy lemon pudding with mango.

The bungalow where Lillian lives is really nice and she took us on a little tour - it is in a cul de sac and overlooks a ravine so is pretty quiet.  It was nearing 5.00pm before we finally got to say our goodbyes and we will now have to get our diaries together to pick the next time we meet.  Lillian has visitors and we have visitors so we think it will probably be in November.  Bloody Hell then it will nearly be Christmas!!

This was the view from the roof terrace this evening - what a beautiful evening - we are so very lucky and sometimes we just need to remind ourselves that people pay thousands for just two weeks on the island and we are here and can enjoy it all the time.
