Lunch with Lilian...

We are racing towards the end of November and once again we have a glorious day.  We need to make the most of it as the forecast for next week is not so good - a sandstorm on Monday and then rain on Tuesday.

Today being Sunday Mum was coming up and today she was bringing Lilian with her.  We had a bit of a panic yesterday when Mum rang to say she had been having a problem with the car cutting out and had forgotten to tell us when we were there on Friday and John could have taken the Note for a spin.  These sorts of intermittent problems are a nightmare so we suggested she took the car for a nice long run yesterday to see if there was an issue.  Thankfully there was not so she was able to drive up to us today and pick up Lilian into the bargain.

When we were doing the village clean last week John came across a discarded stainless steel mug which was filthy.  He felt it was a shame to consign it to the bin so rescued it and we got Mum to put it through the dishwasher and it came out sparkling.  We didn't really fancy drinking out of it but didn't know quite what to do with it until today when I decided to use it as a vase to hold some of the flowers from the garden to make our dining table look attractive.  John thought it was a great idea and it looked really sweet.

We gave the house a clean and tidy - it really comes into its own in the Winter as the colours and furnishings are best suited to this time of year.  There is really nothing more we can do to this space save freshen up the walls after we stop burning - the log burner does tend to leave its mark on magnolia paint!!  Next time we are considering a pellet burner but that wont be for some time yet as Stephanos said our existing log burner will last a few more years after he repaired the hole in the flue.

Being a lovely day we took the cover off of the day bed because we didn't know whether we would, at some point, take advantage of the afternoon sun from that position.  I am really pleased that the waterproof cover I bought for it is doing its job - there is no sign of damp or mould and shortly we will pack it away completely.

John and I had arranged to meet Mum and Lilian at the Droushia Heights for a coffee before lunch.  It was such a lovely day for a walk and the views across to Chryochou Bay were stunning.  We had decided to go to the cemetery first and as we were walking up from the main road our attention was attracted by a massive wolf whistle coming from the Knips residence - it turned out to be Sheila!!  All was good at the cemetery and I will go again tomorrow before Art and give the marble a clean if it needs it but today it looked absolutely fine.

At the Droushia Heights it has been decorated for Christmas.  The florist from Polis that sells the beautiful China had been let loose in the foyer and created a winter wonderland around the piano.  It is really beautiful and accompanied by some tasteful festive music began to make me feel everso slightly Christmassy - so much so that I persuaded John to go down to the Mall tomorrow so that we can go in search of some little giftlets for Mum because although we have given her a ticket to go and see Nutcracker on Ice in a couple of weeks for her main present she needs to have something to unwrap - the only trouble is what the hell do you buy someone who says she doesn't need or want anything???

Mum and Lilian arrived in one piece and we sat down on the sofas and had our drinks and a chat before going back to 10B.  When John and I arrived at the Hotel I realised I had forgotten to put the meal in the oven - it wasn't too much of a problem because it was only to warm it through but I had to get on to it as soon as we got back.  I had made soup for starter and then we were having, at Mum's request, shepherd's pie with peas and creamed carrots and leeks and then a pimped up bought cheesecake for pud.  Lunch went down very well - I think everyone enjoyed it and both Mum and Lilian went home with a doggie bag each and there was still about half of it left for John and I to finish up this coming week.

The evenings are now getting increasingly chilly and today I relented and dug out my slippers - I am still in shorts and and thin but long sleeved top.  The house is holding a reasonable temperature at the moment but if the weather changes as it is supposed to do then we will have the gas fire lit sometime soon.

We settled down tonight for the big match - Sheffield United versus Manchester United.  Although ManU are not the threat they may have been in more recent years this was seen to be a big fixture so John was ecstatic when the Mighty Blades went 2-0 up - in fact in the first half they managed to make the opposition look like a Sunday pub team.  Ecstasy turned to agony in the space of 8 minutes when the opposition scored three goals in quick succession.  Then there was further pressure and anxious moments when an equalising goal by Ollie McBurnie was taken to VAR which generally never goes in the Blades favour but tonight it did - the tie ended in a draw.  Bit of a shame really after a stunning 72 minutes.
