Christmas begins...

Our Christmas festivities begin today. We were off down to Emba to pick up Mum and deposit Freddo at the vets until Friday when Mum will return and Freddo will be released.  John and I had a couple of things to do down in Polis first thing - not least the recycling before we fill it back up again.

You know it must be a BIG holiday when To Karabani on the Polis/Latchi junction is closed but closed it was - John had stopped opposite to get rid of the cans and bottles and it was all shut up.  This is quite unusual, actually it is very unusual but I guess with the weather deteriorating there was going to be little requirement for her snacks before or after Christmas and I think her daughter travels that awful route from Pyrgos daily to come and help her and I really wouldn't fancy doing that at this time of the year when the weather is bad.

The bad weather was late arriving - we had glorious blue skies and puffy clouds first thing but by later afternoon it was blowing a gale and pouring with rain - the old gazebo covers met their maker but we had expected that and will decide what we are going to do next year - either replace with the same or do something more permanent.

We got sorted and got down to Mum's who was ready and waiting - Freddo seemed to sense that today the routine was not the norm so he was a bit wary when he was given an unexpected bowl of biscuits so that John could get a clear run at catching him and putting him in the cat carrier which was successful so once in the carrier he was straight in the car and two minutes later (if that) in the vets and being settled in.  It is only four nights which should be fine - last year he was in for nearly two weeks and that was too long for him really particularly as we have no idea what age he is.

John and I have a really exciting early Christmas present - an extension to the wood burner stack pipe and a whizzy hat to go on top.  John thinks that the 'draw' for our burner is affected by the house next door so this will improve the performance of the fire.  The only trouble is that when he put it up all was calm, all was bright but a couple of hours later it was blowing like a hurricane and we half expected it to snap in half!!  It didn't thankfully so it passed quite a rigorous test on its first night.

I had invited Klaus and Sheila and Rob and Di up this afternoon for tea and stickies but unfortunately Klaus and Sheila are poorly with a chest bug which they do not want to pass on to Mum.  They may not have been able to come but we raised a glass to them using the fabulous bottle of home made mulled wine which Klaus had dropped off for us.  He certainly knows how to make this tipple - it was just a shame that they couldn't share it with us.

Di and Rob called in after they had been to Paphos to do their last minute bits of shopping in readiness for Christmas.  Mulled wine, sausage rolls and mince pies - the tastes and smells of Christmas!!!  When they arrived it was very windy and when they left they managed to dodge the heavy showers to get to the car dry and then get into their house dry.   Lovely to see them, as always, and we wish them all the very best for a peaceful Christmas and happy and healthy New Year.

We also heard from Argy this afternoon, happily things seem to have settled down for her and her family so hopefully they too will enjoy Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year and whilst I think about it Happy Birthday to her mum Kia who was 91 today.

It is the anniversary of Elena's passing today - three years where has that time gone?  She loved to read the blog and would bollock me if I forgot to post or did so after she had gone to sleep.  If you are somewhere reading this one Elena - we miss you xxx
