Goodbye 2019

It is New Year's Eve and we are going to be home alone and I for one am looking forward to the peace and quiet of a night on the sofas with John, the cats and the log burner.  However prior to that we had the whole day ahead of us and one which arrived with fine bright and warm sunshine.  Let's hope this a sign of what is to come in January which tends to be a cold and miserable month followed by a second cold and miserable month.  Having said that the climate here is definitely changing.  Generally now much wetter and warmer than when we first arrived to live here permanently.

With nothing much organised for today we took the opportunity to have a bit of a tidy up before setting off down to the coast where we planned to find somewhere for a spot of light lunch if we could.  We had a lie-in so have to apologise that we weren't able to see Nicky and Mark when they popped up to take a look at the dead tree in their garden which had been battered by the recent winds.  My roses which Mum gave me about 10 days ago if not more are still looking beautiful and as they age their colours have been changing.

We headed off down to Polis and took the opportunity to pick up a few bits in Paps which looked very busy but as every till was open we were in and out in a flash which was a bonus.  We decided to see if the Souli was doing lunch as we fancied their calamari.  Unbelievably we had seen photographs of Latchi yesterday with flood water outside Molos and Faros and around the corner at Porto Latchi but today it had all subsided and we were greeted by a beautiful sight of Latchi beach looking like a picture postcard.

The Souli was open - in fact Frixos seemed pleased to have some company and we took a table out on the terrace which gets the sunshine.  The view of the road isn't as lovely as the view of the sea from the other side but that was completely in shade.

We had a lovely lunch sat outside - at times we were almost too warm!!!!  You really cannot beat freshly cooked calamari, chips, greek salad and village bread toasted with olive oil and oregano eaten outside on New Year's Eve.

Knowing that we would more than likely not be seeing the clock strike Midnight tonight we started to send out our greetings to family and friends near and far starting with Carole and Paul Venner and Mike Barker who all LOVE the Souli.  Carole and Paul will be back again in the Summer which is great news.

We returned home where, although there had been some sunshine, the clouds were gathering and more rain was on its way.  A lot of our Christmas Post had been delayed in Germany.  This seems to happen every year - one year post from the UK got caught up in Athens - some of which arrived and some of which never put in an appearance.  Di and the Bobster had been up to check the post today, negotiating the river which has now appeared in the middle of the main road where the roadworks have been somewhat washed away.  They very kindly brought up the mail that had made its way through for which we were very grateful.  One parcel from Laura (one still missing in action) and one parcel from John's Mum and a selection of cards - all very exciting.  This also gave us the opportunity to wish them a Happy New Year in person rather than just with a text.

We had lots of lovely little gifts in our two packages - oh how well people know us - chocolate and gin accoutrements - Bomba as Bobby would say!!!  Thank you to everyone who remembered us xxx

So with 2019 drawing to a close we settled down to our evening in.  Supper was a stir-fry beef teryaki with chili noodles which used up the remainder of the fabulous fore rib of beef we had had on Sunday.  Our viewing was to binge-watch season 2 of Britannia although we only got half way so will binge watch the remainder tomorrow evening.   We are out to lunch with Mum and Angela and Richard tomorrow at The Farmyard and I for one can't wait!!!

Best wishes to everyone who reads this blog.  I am not sure how much longer I will continue to write it on a daily basis as our life falls into a routine where sometimes there is little to report.  May 2020 be kind to you all xxx
