We are still in the midst of a heatwave and so it is very difficult to do much else than wilt and moan, moan and wilt!!! It is exceptionally hot for May but hopefully this will contribute to the battle against Covid-19 which apparently does not thrive in high temperatures.
I cannot believe then that I was up and baking and cooking first thing this morning but it is Mum's 85th birthday tomorrow and any plans for a celebration had to be shelved. I have, however, got permission to go down for a short period of time and I decided I would take her down lunch. I had taken some pastry out of the freezer and was using some leftover bacon and cheese to make baby quiches - I had just enough for 4, and as John was not coming down with me it meant he could have one or two for his lunch tomorrow. Mum had asked for some egg mayonnaise sandwiches so I got that on the go and John made a batch of his lovely banana muffins minus about two thirds of the sugar we used the first time we made them when they were super sweet and that worked well as they turned out just right.
In the depths of the freezer we came across something called 'bacon ribs' which were a bit of a mystery so John was going to stick them on the bbq - I was worried they might be a bit tough if we did that so they got pressure cooked and then browned off in the oven with a slathering of bbq sauce. They were tasty and tender but we both agreed needed more sauce so if we got them again we would know what to do to improve on them.

It would appear that the heat is taking its toll on our feline friends. Mum sent a photograph of Freddo who was sparko on the sunroom floor so in return I sent a photograph of Charlie and Mr Boo who had bagged the centre of the dining room tiles which presumable were considerably cooler than anywhere else they had been able to find. You have to feel for them in their fur coats when the thermometer is nudging 40 degrees. It has not stopped Charlie wanting to eat though so he has yet to take on his rather more svelte appearance which he has in the Summer.
I nipped out this afternoon to take some food down to Isabel and the butterfly plaque I had made her. It was good to see that she was looking somewhat more chipper than I had anticipated and she sent a text later saying how much she had appreciated the food but even more how much she had loved the butterfly plaque - I know how important butterflies are to her and social distancing means that hugging is absolutely out of the question so I thought it might cheer her up in these desperate times. It would be nice to think that lockdown is lifted as anticipated on Thursday and she is feeling up to it that she might come up to see where we live one day soon. She cannot make any major decisions about her future whilst travel is barred so we need to make her feel comfortable whilst she is here in the village on her own.
