All day today I have thought it was Saturday - I shall be completely out of sorts now for the weekend and that isn't good because we have Sheila and Klaus coming to join us, and Mum, for Sunday lunch. This has enabled us to delve into the freezer and take something out in readiness. This is good because there are things in the depths which are celebrating their birthday!!! I didn't have a freezer when I was in married quarters and only missed it for peas and ice. We saved loads of money by not over catering and eating fresh. There are times I would go back to that as I look at the contents of the freezer, tot up the value and realise there is nothing much in there I really want. The trouble is that because I don't batch cook the baskets are full of leftovers and items which visitors have donated when they have been returning home rather than tasty thought out morsels!
John was up and about early as he wanted to get the tyre on Kenny sorted. I had been able to show him where the screw was protruding and he whipped the wheel off and took it down to Savvas where it was repaired. John had driven down in Lakis's car which gave him the opportunity to get the tyres checked all round as we are still hopeful that they will be able to catch some time over here. Although Savvas does not charge for a puncture repair it saves John a job and so Savvas's young boy (who did the repair anyway) benefits from a tenner.
When Di and Rob came on Wednesday she bought me a chili plant which she had grown from a seed from a chili she was using in cooking. For some reason I couldn't have been listening properly but I expected something about a tenth of the size of the one which pitched up. It is a magnificent specimen and just goes to show that it isn't necessary to go to the expense of buying a packet of seed.
Sadly my tomato plants are woeful. Yellow and spindly they seem to be being attacked by an invisible foe. I have kept them well watered but they have come to nothing and although flowers formed no fruit has appeared and I think their days are numbered.
I was fiddling around in the garden when Das and Belinda arrived for their appointment to see the house next door. They do not seem phased by the amount of work that is required to make that place habitable but they are somewhat take aback by the unrealistic price-tag that the bank has put on it as they try and recoup their losses from repossessing it. After 10 years it would be very strange to have neighbours but as John says, better someone that we know and we can communicate with.
We decided to have a bit of a trip out today as we had nothing much planned and John wanted to support Savvas's decision to purchase a hot food counter for the Gin Bar much to Rachel's annoyance!!! The counter means that they are now offering all sorts of hot pies and pastries and we thought we would go out for tea and stickies. Before we did that we took a detour down to Kritou Terra to investigate the 'new' taverna being advertised at the crossroads - Mylari.
Mylari is the new name for the existing taverna which used to be run by a man from Chlorakas called Glavkos. It is now owned by a guy called Chris who is also the chef and he has given up the bright lights of Paphos, where he made quite a name for himself in various restaurants, to return to family roots and run this place. In talking to him it transpires he is the first cousin of Georgia in the village. It is a basically a grill house but I am guessing there may be a bit of "chefiness" thrown in and on Saturday nights they have live music. We only stopped for a drink but we are going to return to sample the menu.
We stopped in Kathikas for our tea and stickies, John a warm Cinnamon Swirl and me a fresh Pain au Raison which was fabulous and took me back to my working days when we would get H to ring the local deli and order our pains then he would go off and collect them for our elevensis. We would be thrown into a fit of pique if the deli had run out and then we would have to go for second best - ones from Marks and Sparks.
Nicky had asked me if I was going to give blood up in the village this evening as she wanted to go so we set off at 6pm to do our duty - we were the first ones there and it was all very efficient with everyone wearing masks.
When I had my blood pressure taken the woman said that she was sorry but she was going to have to take it again so I thought there was a problem (which wouldn't have surprised me as both Mum and Dad had issues with blood pressure) but she said No - the reading was too good for a woman my age!!! anyway the second reading was the same as the first and so she told me I had excellent blood pressure which is one less thing to worry about.
Nicky and I gave our donations, drank the requisite amounts of water before and afterwards and then made our way home but not before we were told that we could go once a year to the blood place in Paphos general and get a full set of blood tests done free of charge as we were on the Cyprus register of donors. We both felt very virtuous for having done our duty and I know that the hospital is desperate for blood supplies and in particular O Neg which is my group.
Nicky had had a fabulous idea of making some pizzas and coming round to eat them at ours so I had put the oven on before we went to give blood and then we banged them in and rewarded ourselves with a gin. Wow they were good - she had bought standard cook yourself pepperonis and we had added all sorts of leftovers like chorizo, ham, chicken, peppers and onions. We made a stab at three of them and had three left over!!! it was a lovely evening and hopefully a nice end to their busy week.
