The morning after the night before...

I think it is very fair to say that it was a hugely subdued breakfast this morning.  I was the most sensible going to bed at around 2.00am - I have no idea what time the other buggers turned to - I was sound asleep and glad to have managed to get some shut eye because John snored - he has no excuse save for alcohol intake although he blames the fact that his nose has been broken on a number of occasions! and Bill snored but he has an excuse because he suffers from sleep apnoea.  We managed a bit of fruit and yoghurt and some conversation before Wendy and Bill returned to their little gem of a hotel with Kenny just in case they fancied a bit of exploring.

We did very little in the afternoon - I pottered around doing a bit of gardening to keep things under control and then at around 4.00pm Jan from next door and Gail from opposite and I picked up our street cleaning accoutrements and tackled the second half of the road which we started cleaning on Monday.

This stretch was from the cross roads by the cheese factory up to the T junction where you turn left for Inea or right for the Mukhtar's supermarket.  Gail and Pete have stopped walking their dogs up that way because it is so disgusting.

We cannot get our heads around the fact that people had bagged up rubbish and then thrown the whole bag out when there was a bin only a couple of yards away.  These seemed to have originally contained food so you can imagine how lovely these smelled having been in the hedgerow for an indeterminate period of time.

We also encountered loads and loads of empty miniature bottles of Vodka with some wet wipes and a pair of discarded ladies panties - NICE!!!  How people can profess to loving this island and then systematically try and drown it in litter baffles me.

Sadly the drive for recycling is actually having an adverse effect because in places like Polis they are being offered a door collection service for their recycling and as a result the general recycling bins have been removed so for people like us who live in villages without this service there are no places to take our waste unless we go down to the recycling centre which is excellent but you have to make a special trip there - it isn't somewhere you would drive past.

We very nearly ran out of bags.  We had taken the equivalent of about 10 big blue bags and filled them all.  We had worked our way up the left hand side and then back down the right hand side and then wandered up the road to Kaponas for a hand wash and a drink and debrief.  Once again Eleni was super kind and gave us our first round of drinks - we had to have a second in order that she got any money.  It was cool but we sat outside and were entertained by the sound of a very lively Syrian wedding which was taking place.  I would have loved to have gone and seen how they celebrate, it sounded delightful, with lots of laughter and music.

We had left overs for tea - what remained of the meal I had given to Wendy and Bill last night.  It was lovely and there is some of the lentil dish left for us to have tomorrow - both John and I are addicted to it so have to thank Liselotte for introducing it to us.
