So our plans for today had changed - we were going to be going out to lunch with Mum and friends Jackie and Costas down at Londos Perasma which is near the airport but sadly Jackie and Costas are both feeling under the weather so we postponed. Better to be safe than sorry.
So Mum came up and we decided to go down to Latchi and have a little walk before the make do and mend lunch John and I had rustled up from what we could find in the fridge/freezer and cupboards.
It was glorious, really warm and we parked at Porto Latchi and walked around the sunny side of the harbour watching the Sunday visitors and the fishermen.
We walked to the end of the harbour where there is a magnificent sculpture of a mythical queen called Regina. It was placed in situ in 2020 and donated by the women of the Arsinoe Inner Wheel Club of Polis Chrysochous. The sculpture is made of bronze and depicts Regina, a beautiful and mysterious queen with close connections with the Akamas and surrounding areas.Regina is mentioned in many of the myths and traditions of Cyprus. Some depict her as very rich and others as kind and compassionate. In other depictions she is cruel, vindictive or weak. She is associated with mediaeval buildings, castles, towers, caves, churches, villages and mountains.
There are many towers in Cyprus connected with Regina and according to tradition on of these is in the Akamas close to the Baths of Aphrodite. However, archaeological research found that the tower, known as Pyrgos tis Regina, was in fact part of a Byzantine monastery.
We walked back to the car. We were surprised to see that Porto Latchi (the outside bit at least) looked to have been completely packed away. It was open the other week. The ice-cream bit had gone completely including all the freezers. I am not sure that this is normal for this time of year, maybe it is, maybe they don't want the freezers out when it might rain.
We did a little detour before going home. We wanted to show Mum where Kaye will be staying when she comes out next. This is the Eliofos Centre and Sarah and Matthew if you are reading, yes, it is your favourite No 20 where you stayed twice. Even in January these places look neat and tidy - We think it will be an ideal base for her, close enough to the sea and close enough for a nice little walk into Latchi but far enough away for peace and quiet.
We were glad when we heard that she had got home safe and sound - it is always a worry but one which we wont have to deal with much longer.
