Day 33...

Gosh it has been an odd day today!!  We woke up at the customary 7.30am despite having shutters which block out all the light in the bedroom and probably because we can hear Andreas' carpenters at work over across the fields from us where he is having a house built.

Things started off badly when John put on the kettle for breakfast (it didn't suit him!!) and suddenly we had no electric.  It was too early to ask our neighbours if they were also affected and with our unique electric supply situation we couldn't be sure whether or not it was exclusive to us.  Without electric we are stuck, we cannot do any sort of cooking and we cannot have water as it is provided via an electric pump!!  John went off to investigate and pressed a few things and suddenly we had electric so we thought it was a dodgy switch but apparently, as we found out later, it was a power cut.  Crisis over we carried on and did more work on the house concentrating on putting up pictures and lighting.

We had invited our neighbours around today at 1.00pm so we nipped into town to get some bits and pieces (including cakes as it was Sean's birthday).  We were running a bit late so I rushed into the shower leaving John to sort out the shopping and I was just about to dry my hair when the electric went again.  This time it wasn't a power cut it was definitely a problem with our supply and I now had a freezer full of food...  A panic phonecall to Philippos got him to galvanize the electrician Savvas into action.

This all happened just before Sean and Sharon were due to arrive - but true to his word Philippos got hold of Savvas and eventually his gofer arrived - decided he couldn't fix the problem and then Savvas turned up himself!  Eventually we had electricity and in the meantime John organised for Savvas to come on Monday to connect up my cooker, hob and extractor so that I can actually cook properly next week.

It has been the most beautiful afternoon up in Droushia with completely cloudless skies and unbroken sunshine.  We spent a very pleasant afternoon having a few drinks and nibbles and the cakes we had purchased from Orphanides for Sean's birthday.  Sean and Sharon go back to England on Sunday but are planning to come back again at Christmas and have a long term plan to come back for good in 2015.

During the course of the afternoon we also managed to get the wood delivered to finish the front gate and fence and the tongue and groove for the bathroom and get rid of our empty boxes to the guy that Costas had contacted for us.  I didn't meet George the recycling man but John says that he was the sort of man that reminded him of why he wanted to move to Cyprus - a real Gent who is probably now our friend for life.  John says he would love to have boxes to give him every week!

Friday night tea in the Wiseman household consisted of Cyprus Koupies and Salad.  Koupies are made of bulgar wheat, flour, oil, salt and egg and stuffed with ground meat, lots of onions, parsley and spices and we like them a lot.  We had them washed down with our expensive carton Rose Wine and accompanied by tzatsiki, houmus and village bread.  The only problem at the moment is that I don't have a fully functioning sink so we have to wash up in a bowl (my turn tonight and check out those alien arms and bingo wings - exercise here I come...)

Our neighbours thought our house was very homely and when you look at it through others' eyes I have to admit I am really pleased with how it is turning out.  Anyone who went to our house in Greenwood Road will recognise a lot of what is there and fortunately it doesnt look out of place in a Mediterranean setting.  I am pleased to say that I found the box today that held the leaving present that Gemma gave me and it is the little statuette on the right which we have placed on the top of the fire - it is perfect and fits in so well with the colour scheme in the room and it is lovely reminder of a very good friend who is about to become a brilliant mother - John and I send her and Mark our very, very best wishes for their impending happy event in August.

This last photograph was taken by John - he is very proud of the new fan in the lounge/diner even though he melted his drill adjusting the down pole!!  He thinks it looks like the prop for an old Spitfire aircraft!

Well we are hoping to have a lie-in tomorrow and then sometime in the afternoon John is going to go fishing with Sean - well dangle a worm over the edge at Latchi or Pomos or somewhere.

He says it is going to be a damn sight warmer than the night he and Trev went to West Bexington and huddled in a duvet only to catch one little tiddler!

John tells me that he has just had to fight off a mahousive fly that was in our bedroom and it was the size of a small cat - he had to use one of the V-pillows and a teddy to defend himself - my hero xxx
