It was to be our first Sunday down in Emba just the three of us. It has been four weeks since my Dad passed away and in some ways it seems like yesterday and in others it seems like months have gone by. It feels strange because this is the longest amount of time that I have gone without seeing him in the seven years that we have been living over here. Mum is fantastic although I know she will have her moments but between the three of us we are still able to raise a smile and enjoy one another's company.
John thought we should set off early today so that he could rescue his ladder from Dip and Karen's apartment before the first tourists staying there arrive on Tuesday and so that Mum and I could have a wander around the Mall. We had planned a walk down by the harbour but the weather conditions were appalling today as a massive sandstorm engulfed the island making it hard to breath or see.
As we pulled out onto the Polis to Peyia road we pulled out in the middle of a massive cycle race that has been taking place on the island this weekend. This major international event is now called the ‘Cyprus Gran Fondo’ and is the new new name for the Volkswagen Cyprus Cycling Tour, which has been active for the past five years.
Although it was estimated that there would be about 350 cyclists from over 24 countries we reckon we counted around 500 this morning, all shapes, all sizes, all kinds of bikes and both male and female all of whom had apparently set off from Paphos Harbour at 9.30am and would take in Peyia, Kathikas, Kritou Tera, Stroumbi and Tsada if they didn't get mown down by erratic drivers weaving their way in and out of the athletes.
Whilst John shot off down to Universal Mum and I mooched around Jumbos and got some more of the tile stickers that I had used to tart up the glass topped coffee table in Mum's sunroom which she hated and now she loves. She wants me to try and cover the round dining table in the sunroom with the same stuff and I said I would give it a try.
We then returned to 3a Georgiou Elinas to make sure all the remaining clocks had been adjusted to take into account that during the night we had sprung forward an hour. Whilst doing so Mum rustled up a really superb lunch of minted lamb tenderloin with some lovely potatoes which had tomato and mozzarella in them and veg which was absolutely delicious.
We then embarked on a game of Rummikub - a family favourite which I am rubbish at but which we all enjoy and which John won which was always going to be the case as he was scorer!
Not the same sort of Sunday as we have been used to but we made the best of it and will continue to do so.
