We had breakfast with Nicky and Mark before they returned home. I was mindful of the fact that we were going out for Sunday Lunch at the Farmyard in Kathikas with Simon, Melanie, Jasmine and Frances and so I went easy on the crumpet intake so as not to spoil my meal!!!! Before saying goodbye we pencilled in our next weekend which is not cast in stone but we have found that this system works well as we have so far managed to keep the dates clear. It was a good weekend and hopefully the Kirby's will have felt refreshed as a result.
Jasmine and Frances apparently refer to my Mum as 'Granny Mo' and whilst they have been quite shy in the past today, once they settled in, they were brilliant with Mum. Frances is the younger child and she is a real live wire. She is feisty and wilful at times and charming at others. We recognise that Sunday Lunch is probably very boring for small children but on the whole they really were no trouble. They both like to be entertained and crave some attention and if given one or both are relatively happy. In this picture Mum is getting Frances to eat things on her plate which she had given up on. Mum obviously had the knack because Frances duly obliged. Frances is so funny at times, she is so matter of fact about things - Jasmine pointed at something on her plate with a look of disgust and Frances declared "Jasmine - it's cauliflower and it's cheese and it's lovely!" Jasmine was unconvinced!!!
Jasmine is most definitely more reserved than Frances but is super bright and given something constructive to do comes into her own. She had a word search and puzzle book to keep her occupied and Mum loves a word search so together they did the exercises. Jasmine was more than happy if I marked her work and gave her stars which challenged my drawing capabilities. I cannot believe how grown up she has become and although much quieter than Frances she is coming into her own. She is most definitely a one to one girl and in those situations is charming and engaging. Melanie and Simon should be very proud of their two girls who did very well in what was primarily a very adult environment and we shall most definitely arrange to see them here again. I think we five adults all enjoyed the food - couldn't fault it myself!!!
This week the soup was carrot and coriander so both John and Mum could have some because normally it is mushroom. I had soup, no salad although I wanted some but knew I wouldn't do justice to the main course if I did and although there were half a dozen or so meats to chose from just had the fabulous beef that Savvas cooks to perfection - for me anyway because I like rare!!! The puddings were fabulous but I limited myself to red velvet cake, carrot cake and a little baby strawberry and cream pastry. There is a danger of overloading your plates as there is so much to chose from but today I was sensible and I enjoyed it all the more so for doing that. It was nice not to be cooking and it was nice to spend the meal with other people, it was also nice to see Jasmine and Frances bonding with Mum who is brilliant with small children.
Mum arrived safe and sound and we trundled off to the Farmyard good and early because we had seen that the overflow carpark was currently unusable as a whole load of hardcore had been dumped into it.
Melanie and Simon used to live behind Mum and Dad when they rented in Lakoudia Street. It transpired that they know our friends Hilary and Keith because Simon has played in the same band as them in the past and the first time we met them they were in the process of buying a house in Droushia. Then we found out that Simon used to live in Gorran Haven and went to the same school as Dad although many years apart and they got married at the Grange in Oborne which we used to frequent when we lived in Yeovil. I can distinctly remember the day that Simon and Melanie came to our house to tell us that Melanie was pregnant with Jasmine whose birthday is quite close to John's and then remember them telling us that she was pregnant with Frances whose birthday is pretty close to mine! So we feel we have a real connection with this lovely family and try and catch up as and when we can.
