Today is Valentine's Day and we had decided that rather than go out we would do a supper here at home and invited Rob and Di to join us. I was cheating and had bought in most of what we were going to have so that I wouldn't be glued to the cooker all evening. There were some elements I was doing myself but basically we were having pate on toast with a salad garnish to start followed by Thai salmon fishcakes from the Seafood Shop on the Coral Bay Road with a hot shredded veggie stack and some new potatoes with browned butter and garden peas and then Paps own red velvet cake puddings to finish.
John planned to kick of the proceedings with Bellinis in the conservatory with a nice fresh strawberry bobbing up and down to add the whole Valentine's effect and I was dipping some of the remaining fruit in chocolate to accompany the red velvet cake and we were trying to make some red heart shaped ice-cubes with a cranberry liqueur we had been given at Christmas.
John shot off down to Polis to replenish our gas stocks so that we could ensure the house would be warm this evening and whilst he was there I made a Valentine's card - we aren't overly lovey dovey people but this year, in particular, has been difficult and John has been my rock throughout. Yes we fight and bicker but we love each other dearly and sometimes it is good to show it.

John came back armed with a bouquet of red roses which were beautiful and finished off the table which I had dressed ready for the occasion complete with the little ceramic bears I had picked up on my last foray into Jumbos. I had also been onto the internet to find some quizzes which we could tackle between courses. For the Bobster there was a lyric round and then there was a 30 question Valentine's Day teaser to get the old grey matter working - I just thought it might provide a bit of fun should the conversation falter - which next to never happens in the Veasey's company.
We got everything prepared and then even managed a couple of hours sat down relaxing before John went and picked our guests up. It was super warm and cosy in the house and the cats were very appreciative of that fact. We had moved two of the baskets to right in front of the gas fire and Mr Boo and Charlie had taken up residence good and early claiming top spot for themselves.

We had a great evening. Conversation flowed as easily as the wine and the quizzes were well received even if the lyric one was much harder than anticipated due to the lack of lyrics! The food was good and I can recommend buying everything in if you don't want to be a slave to the stove!! John fetched Di and Rob at 6.30pm and we were pushing them out of the door at gone 1.00am the next day - I think Mr V may have been a tad squiffy and I think Mrs V probably had her work cut out getting him to walk home directly and not via the village or any local ditch! I cannot believe that John and I thoroughly tidied everything away before retiring at what was way past our normal bedtime but I am always grateful that we do the following day when I get up to survey the scene and am then pleasantly surprised.
This last picture is for Diana - I wonder if she can remember what we were drawing and why we were drawing it? I can remember what but why simply eludes me for the moment!
