Jane and John's last night...

We had a quiet start to the morning - the clock change is hitting us a bit like jet lag - we don't feel like we have had a normal night's sleep (which of course we haven't having lost an hour) and it is an hour later than it 'feels'  - we shall be very glad when this clock change malarkey gets given a big fat draft chit.

Someone suffering from real jet-lag is Les who has arrived back in Droushia after some time in Hong Kong with his partner Clare.  They have a lovely traditional house in the village and Clare currently teaches in Hong Kong (Les is retired) and she is seriously contemplating a new life in the sun or rather Droushia - no sun, not since about November this year!! We had taken in some post for Clare and Les had come to pick it up.  During the course of our conversation it was apparent that the whole clock-change thing had completely passed him by.  Apparently they don't do it in Hong Kong so Les  hadn't done it here!  Clare will be over shortly to join him for a couple of weeks so we intend to get together with Rob and Di and have a meze in Finikas to celebrate.

Today is UK Mothering Sunday:

(Mothering Sunday is a holiday celebrated by Christians in the United KingdomIreland and some other Anglophone countries. It is generally observed in parishes of the Roman Catholic ChurchChurch of England, as well as in the rest of the UK and many Anglicanparishes throughout the world, especially in Canada and Australia. It falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter Day. Once observed as a day on which people would visit their "mother" church, it has become an occasion for honouring the mothers of children and giving them presents. It is increasingly being called Mother's Day, although that name properly belongs to the American secular holiday which is quite distinct from the original Mothering Sunday.

Mother's Day is not until Sunday 12th May so if Mum plays her cards right she will get to celebrate twice as Cyprus makes quite a thing of Mother's Day.  I had made Mum a card and not knowing quite what to give her as a gift decided that we would pay for her and her friends to have lunch at the Herb Garden in Akourdaleia around her Birthday.

It being Mothering Sunday and also Jane and John's last full day we were meeting up this evening down in Paphos for a meal so we had what remained of the day to ourselves after losing the hour (this has clearly had an adverse effect on my general demeanour!!).

I have taken a photograph of the cats and plan to give it to Kenna with a bit of a description about each so that this is her homework and she can then deal with them if they start bugging the life out of her.

No 1 cat is Chivers/Chivvy-Pop/Popstar or just Popsie, our somewhat gender fluid cat - although a neutered male, he is soft as butter and a wuss, a lover not a fighter, has a 'limp' paw that he waves in front of him when he wants a treat - he could be mistaken for being female as the whole Alpha Male thing passed him by.   He is a fussy eater and prefers treats to anything else.

No 2 Cat is Minnie/Minnie-Mou/Schmoozer-Moozer or Minzer - she is a spayed female although you would never guess it the way she likes to present her bottom in your face like she is on heat.  She is gentle and timid and can only be cuddled when she wants to be.  She likes to be fed in splendid isolation on the window sill whatever the weather - there is no room for anyone else to get to her food and piss her off.  She runs around with her underhang dragging on the floor, the result of early spaying and lack of pelvic floor exercises.  She is a fussy eater and prefers raw liver to anything else.

No 3 Cat is Charlie/Charles-Farles/Charlie-Farlie/Fat Boy.  He is our disabled cat having been involved in a car accident before Christmas so the right side of his face doesn't function - this is a facial nerve injury which doesn't show much sign of improvement.  Charlie is a thug and a bit thick and constantly hungry - he definitely has ADHD - he comes in every morning wreaking havoc until he gets fed.  He is not a fussy eater - he will eat anything except treats!

No 4 Cat is Boris/Mr Boo/Boo-Boo.  He is our very vocal, very good looking baby.  Of all the cats he is the most snuggly and likes to come onto the bed, lift the duvet and get in right next to you and go to sleep.  He talks, if he is out and you call him you can hear him replying from a great distance and if he does not then that is a worry.  He likes a lap and likes to flop upside down stretching the length of your legs.  He is a fussy eater too preferring raw liver to anything else and has been known to 'pogo' up and down in anticipation as you are preparing it.

Hopefully that will be sufficient information for Kenna!!

It has been another cold and miserable day. The clock change doesn't appear to have made any improvement weatherwise and it is so hard to know what to wear when going out to a taverna - some have good heating, some have none.

John had suggested going to Les Amis down in Kato Paphos and this moved last week from its previous location in an oldish wooden building to up the road so we had no idea what to expect.

I opted for layers - this is always a winner and means I can shed the evidence that we have come down from the 'frozen North' if needs be.

It may have been marginally warmer down on the coast but as you can see from the photograph of the sky (which I took from Mum's front door) it was not settled in fact it looked positively stormy.

John drove tonight and we picked up Mum, stopping to change the clocks in her house that she cannot reach and then went on to pick up Jane and John.  There had been a bomb scare at the Mall this afternoon so drivers had been warned to avoid that area - good job we had seen the warning as we might well have taken this route.

We had opted to go to the restaurant early and it was just as well that we had booked because by the time we left every table was taken or reserved.  Les Amis has moved up the road from its previous location and is on the opposite side to where it used to be, opposite a bit of land which purports to be a car-park although it is more of a vehicle and sofa dumping ground!  This is a bit of a shame because if you were sat outside on the terrace this is what you would be looking at.  Inside however it is light and bright and modern and WARM!!!  The price of the set menu has increased about a euro I think but there is still an excellent choice for a fixed price three course meal or a la carte if you prefer.  I have to say my salmon was excellent.  We had a lovely evening.  I cannot believe that Jane and John will have been there for nearly 5 weeks - it has gone by so quickly with less trauma than last year and probably less sunshine.  Anyway a big thank-you to them for paying for the drinks this evening.  If you want a reasonably priced meal, in nice surroundings with very pleasant and attentive staff then this is one to try.  We shall definitely go back again.
