A trip to Viklari

It is absolutely lovely having friends around in the Summer but it isn't doing my waistline any good at all - today we were going with our neighbours to one of the most stunning restaurant venues I have been to anywhere in the world.  Viklari or as it is more commonly known The Last Castle which is on the edge of the Akamas.  We have been going here for years when it really was an off-roading adventure to get to the restaurant.  Now it is much easier to get there although still, for some, quite a challenge.

There was a time when they served Souvla (pork and chicken) and nothing else but they have moved with the times and now if you pre-order you can have their bean dish which I absolutely adore and even more recently they have added the facility to have fish.

Lakis, Argy, Kia and John shared souvla and I stuck to my beans - all served with fresh salad, bread and big fat chips.  Today they even cut a fresh bunch of juicy grapes for us to have afterwards.  One piece of Souvla and a plate full of chips came home with us - I planned to recook the chips tomorrow for when Mum is with us.

It was breezy up there but fortunately it was a warm breeze - it can sometimes be rather chilly up there if the wind is coming in off the sea.  We were pleased that we had been sensible and packed some cushions because those traditional woven village chairs are more than a little uncomfortable on your backside.

Anyway it was a very pleasant afternoon and by the time we got back from out trip we were all flagging a bit - eating a big meal lunchtime has that effect!!  I stayed for a coffee and then apologised that I needed to get home and bake a cake in readiness for Mum tomorrow.  I very nearly thought 'sod it' to the cake and went for a snooze but I didn't and the resulting banana loaf was actually one of the best I have knocked up.

Have to say a big thank you to our neighbours for kindly treating us today - I know it was to say thank-you to John for all his help so technically I should have paid for myself!!!
