I am flying off to the UK for a short trip today so yesterday was a whirl of getting sorted and packed and the house and garden in a state that John doesn't have to panic and then last night we did panic because John suddenly realised that he has a trip booked back to the UK soon after I return and his passport runs out in February!!!
It was a dry and bright day yesterday. In fact when I was out in the garden and in the sunshine it was extremely warm, so much so that I actually had to swap my sweatshirt for a vest!!! It is amazing how a little tidy in the garden after the recent ravages of wind and rain and hail can make a massive difference and because our garden is a little on the wild side normally it doesn't take long to make that difference. There have been some casualties in terms of breakages and wear and tear but these will get addressed once Spring is here.
It is easy, at the moment, to think that some plants have been lost forever but I remember last year the ficus and the big thing that is in the pot outside the front door were completely bereft of leaves and looked like interesting sticks and then slowly but surely they came back to life. I do not think we have had the worst of the cold weather yet - snow is forecast for the end of the week and we generally get at least one day of snow and this is often in February.

On the back decking it looks like someone has attacked the orange flowering plant with a flame thrower and the leaves were all over the place - this looks messy and they can be quite slippery so needed to be sorted. For some reason I cannot get the blog to display the before picture on the left and the after picture on the right but I think you will see what I am talking about!!! I have found the best thing to scrape up the leaves is a window squeegee blade thing - it's perfect and doesn't leave anything behind. It isn't so good for cleaning your windows afterwards mind!!!
I spend a couple of hours tidying and picking up leaves so that the garden looked reasonably tidy and then John and I sat down to enjoy the last of the sunshine with a coffee. Charlie was also enjoying the fact that the cushions on the sofa were dry and there was some genuine warmth to the sun. Bless him his facial nerve has never quite returned to normal so he has this freaky eye thing going on!!
John went and checked the post today and we had a load of parcels arrive which had been expected before Christmas and which hadn't arrived until now. These included my funky waste bin (the original one which was due weeks ago and which Amazon replaced) so I now have two, my halogen oven cookery book so I can make better use of the machine or rather John can as he was the one that insisted I bought it and some new cushion covers for the conservatory which have cats faces on them and which I LOVE and others may not!!
We had planned a quiet evening in - I had cooked some pulled pork which we were having with wedges and coleslaw and we were watching the end of the series Cheat which we had started previously but this was not before my final gift to John which was to have some fresh bedding tonight and then if he is careful with the rotation he can make it last until I return home!!! Only kidding - he is quite capable of changing the sheets!!! My idea of a good night's sleep like the princess and the pea in my super comfy bed went out the window when John remembered his passport and then we had a frantic hour or so working out how we could get it replaced in time!!
