13th February

There are some things which you really can stomach so much better when you are fighting fit than when you are poorly but I reckon there is never a good time to encounter a dismembered rat which has been brought in as a gift by one of the cats.

Whichever one it was had come in through the cat-flap and deposited it on the rug in the corridor bit where there is poor lighting.  I had come out of the lounge and was making my way into the main part of the conservatory when I realised that there was a dark 'mass' in front of me on the rug - further inspection revealed the headless corpse of a carob rat and a little way along was the remnants of the head.  Oh what joy!!!  John shovelled it up and dispensed with it.  Thanks Cat!  Don't know who the culprit was but that will probably become apparent when one or other of them chucks up little partially digested furry bits.

Cyprus has next to no wildlife - probably due to the Cypriot male love of Hunting and a large proportion of the population seem to regard cats and dogs as pests.  Sadly Cyprus is listed as one of the EU nations where animal welfare is deemed unacceptable which is very sad although we think we may have seen some very slight improvement over the years that we have been living here.   We are, therefore, somewhat surprised by the house in Arodes which appears to have its own mini-zoo.  We cannot begin to imagine why anyone would want to keep such an eclectic selection of beautiful beasts in a domestic garden - we do not like to see wild animals kept captive but the one redeeming feature was that in spite of all the terrible weather we have had recently the animals were clean and their cages were clean and they looked to be in good condition.

John seems to be succumbing to my lurgy now and I am hoping it doesn't develop any further than the level at which it is at the moment as I wont be able to cope!!!  This bug is lingering and today I was deaf and had so much gloop slipping down the back of my throat I thought I was going to be sick.  On the plus side the weather has improved and it is definitely warmer during the day.

We had a delivery of wood today from Stephanos and he came in and replaced the fire rope on the door of the wood burner so everything is tickety-boo in that regard.  We have bought the wood now in readiness for next winter so that it will good and dry and burn well.
