27th April

It is 27th April and it is a Monday.  We are hopeful that there is a meeting today to discuss the progress of the lockdown and changes which are to be implemented.  We think this goes to the President tomorrow for his consideration and then to the government on Wednesday.  I am hoping that will mean we are given permission for more than one outing a day.

We went shopping this morning.  There was a very small queue outside Paps so it didn't take long to get in.  I thought that there were a few more empty spaces on shelves than normal but it might have just been that they had not as yet stocked up on those items.  We are still unable to buy anything deemed non-essential, not that we want anything but it does seem a bit odd.  People have been saying that the prices are going up - I am not aware of that for anything we buy regularly.  The fruit and veg tend to be seasonal and the price reflects this so there are times of the year when these are more expensive plus people forget the wet weather we had during the winter which must have affected farmers' crops.  We didn't want much but I couldn't get Branston Sandwich Pickle or Sesame Oil or Whole Grain Mustard but I am sure I will cope.

John and I are getting rather too used to being in and around the house - it is our little sanctuary from all the madness.  We have money, food, drink, water, light and heat, the cats and each other so we feel that we are very lucky and are careful not to lose sight of this.

Back at home the challenge for this week is "The view from my window" and I am trying to get some inspiration.

There is so much colour and cheer when we look around and although I have always referred to Villa 10b as our 'little' home when you look at the various areas of the garden you realise that it is not as small as you think.  Fortunately I have tried to make it so it doesn't take up all of my time and I only have to water anything that is in a pot and not in the ground.

On this subject we have a pot in the conservatory which  houses a peace lily which looks very unhappy.  Even though I have fed the lily the leaves are yellow and when it does produce a flower it is too hot and the tips get burned and crispy.  The pot itself was probably meant to be ornamental rather than have something in it because at the bottom it keeps going black and mouldy and the outer paintwork is flaking off.

Today we decided it had to go but I cannot throw away anything which is living so we decided to move the whole kit and caboodle outside where it has a chance of surviving and we moved a pot that was in the corner by the pool into the conservatory and decided to put a pot there which had plants which would not drop into the water.  One of my beloved hostas was in need of repotting so we decided that would be ideal and for the time when it is without any leaves we underplanted with some variegated ivy and vinca which should trail down.  It will be better there as it is up high and less likely to get eaten by slugs and snails - as I see something has already had a chomp on it - although I notice something has eaten the two Chrysanthemums that were just springing to life and I can see no evidence of what.  We don't use slug pellets because of the cats so do have a problem at certain times of the year.

I did do a bit of art this afternoon whilst I was sitting in the conservatory.  This was my view actually - I can see this pile of stones through the glass in the front door as it sits in the front garden.  I was trying out using coloured pencils for a change and was quite pleased with the result - I am not sure that I will be entering it into the challenge though - I know the standard of the others but if I cannot come up with anything else then it will be better than nothing.

Pleased to say that Mum was feeling better today - I don't think she was, by any means, the only person having a bit of a melt-down yesterday.  It has been a long time since we were in 'normal' conditions and as we always have Mum here on a Sunday for lunch I know it is difficult for her.

I text Di to say to her that I was in danger of being arrested for having a dodgy barnet, and I hoped that they allow visits to the hairdresser very very soon.  She pointed out that the four of us had not been together socially since 10th March when we had breakfast together at the Hotel after my birthday celebrations - that seems an absolute lifetime ago.

It was my favourite tea tonight - Brie and Bacon salad but with added va va voom as the Brie was peppered and we had a pear that needed eating up - I really enjoyed this.  We then had a quiet night watching one episode of Gangs of London which is exceptionally violent without needing to be, rather far-fetched and, if it is supposed to be a modern version of Peaky Blinders, falls short because there is no eye candy in the form of Cillian Murphy and it lacks the finesse that came with that particular series.

The Ration Book...
Ways to get by
1. Varnish the soles of children's shoes to make them last longer
2. Cut the toes form shoes when children outgrow them and call them sandals
3. Cut up old mackintoshes to make bibs
4. Cut up surgical lint to make nappies
5. Make squares out of old stockings to use as dishcloths
