I have been really struggling to get any sort of decent sleep over the last couple of days as our bedroom is so hot even though the evenings are beginning to feel quite a bit cooler. I don't know what is happening with my feet as they are restless and feel like they are on fire!!! It isn't pleasant but the cats benefit as they tend to get a cuddle and something to eat at odd times of the night when I get up to try and cool down.
This morning I woke with a familiar stabbing pain above my ear which meant that I had neuralgia again. Fortunately I can recognise the signs and deal with it - the first time I was convinced I had an ear infection and suffered for a week before going to see Dr George in Polis who used every bit of medical machinery at his disposal to show me that it most certainly wasn't what I had self diagnosed. All in all I am feeling under par - only firing on three cylinders at the moment.
I did have a smile this morning though when our lovely friend Catherine Wilson sent over a photograph of her daughter Natalie's 2nd birthday party when I was roped in as an emergency face-painter with absolutely no experience but a beginners guide and some paints. I don't think 2 year olds really care about the quality of the artwork thank goodness!!!
Anyway we now know that this was 10 years ago because as I write this post it coincides with the twelfth birthday of Natalie Kate Louise Wilson aka NibbleNat. I think that is her in the blue cardi at the front of the photograph and her elder sister Lauren is the one who is braving my handy work.
I reckon John was the other side of the world when that photograph was taken either on his way down one side of South America en route to the Falklands or on his way back up the other side of South America on his way home as he had handed in his notice under the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro.
I loved that top I was wearing and am sure I brought it with me but it was sleeveless and made of very thick t-shirt material so completely unsuitable for the weather conditions over here which was a shame.
I did very little today, I am not even sure I went outside the front gate and I was very grateful that we didn't have to negotiate the supermarket as we are taking Mum out tomorrow so I get the day off. Even though we are going out tomorrow I needed to make sure that the seating area around our outside table was clean and tidy as this will be where we get the best of the shade if we sit out. There was the tell-tale signs of a munching machine feasting on the vine leaves but on closer inspection there were three!!! Even though they are brown they manage to hide themselves well. I had to get John to reach up and take them down - this is fine but he doesn't like touching them so that is my job. I move them on their leaves to a place of safety somewhere where they can do what they need to do without depositing poo on our table. I have been back again this morning to check and found two more!!
We were staying in this evening and I had scoured the depths of the fridge and had decided to make a vegetarian pasta dish for supper as John thinks we should try and have at least one day a week without meat which is a bit of a revelation as he has always been a confirmed meat eater but having lived here nearly 10 years I have learned so much more about vegetarian cooking and embracing vegetables. I also decided to have a go at making Pitta bread for the first time. The recipe I had chosen needed little to no kneading and they turned out reasonably ok although I think they needed to take on more colour. They were cooked but looked a bit anaemic! This was because I didn't think my new cooker could go up to 250F which was what I needed so these were done at 240F and they puffed up and created the 'pocket' inside but were pale.
The meal itself was a pasta dish with halloumi, mint and lemon (the picture above is from the website and not mine). It was delicious - John really enjoyed it and said he would happily have that one night a week for supper. We had a green salad with it with a honey and lime dressing which added a bit a zing. Next time I will add a lot more mint as I couldn't really detect much flavour from the amount I used but I don't have much in the garden at the moment.
The slightly cooler evening meant we were happy to sit and watch some television and we decided to start a series and I got to choose. I plumped for The Luminaries and managed two episodes - I haven't got a clue what is going on but am really enjoying it. It reminds me a little of Carnival Row which we watched last year.
