We try somewhere new...

Today is Sunday - I think I eventually managed to nod off to sleep at around 4.30am this morning.  It wasn't so hot last night but I just went to bed and just couldn't drop off to sleep - as a result this morning I felt very tired and woolly so I was very grateful not to be cooking today.

Today we were off down the hill to patronise the newly opened Gravity Road Diner run by our friend, the author Stephen Haughan and his business partner Tracy.  This was due to have opened on May 1st but Stephen was stuck in the UK due to the pandemic so his plans were put on hold until he was able to return.

Clearly a lot of thought, time, effort and money has gone into revamping the taverna (formerly known as the Karithea) which has been closed for quite a long time.

The inside of the diner is beautifully decorated with an area dedicated to Stephen's love of books - this will come into its own in the Winter providing the bloody restrictions are lifted as no-one will want to be sitting inside with a mask on!!

Fortunately there is a lot of space outside which has been laid out for both eating and relaxing and there are plenty of shade trees which was the order of the day today.  Stephen had reserved us a nice table up in the area which will, come the Winter, be glassed in so that we had shade and protection from any breeze that might be whipping its way up the valley.  It was good to see that there was a reasonable number of people in bearing in mind that this is a new venture.

John and I plumped for the ribs and Mum had that good old traditional Sunday Lunch combo of sausage, eggs, beans and chips.  She had such a plateful I thought there was no-way she was going to manage even half of it but give her her due she only left a few beans and a few chips!!!  We had contemplated having a pud but with the size of the mains couldn't really fit anymore in.

Stephen and Tracy really deserve to do well as they have worked so very hard to get this venture off of the ground.  Who would have thought that a throwaway comment to Stephen last year to come and help on a village clean would find him a new home, a new business and a new future on an island that he has loved and visited for years but never found a reason to stay.  Well he has it now!!!

Back home we sought the comfort of the shade under the gazebo where, even though we had ensured it was clean this morning, there was evidence of munchers.

After a thorough search we eventually found them - two more caterpillars of the Leventis Hawk Moth.  That has made a total of seven in the last two days!!

After a bit of a rest John and Mum decided they could tackle a bit of cheesecake for pudding - I declined - cheesecake is not my favourite and this was a baked one which I find to be a bit 'claggy'.

I was pleased when Mum text to say she was home safely especially as Liselotte had phoned to tell me that there was an accident at Stroumbi which was causing a huge tailback.  Fortunately Mum takes the other, Coral Bay, route back home so did so unhindered.

Both John and I were absolutely shattered and did nothing more than watch the second T20 cricket match England v Australia which, once again, was exciting - I am definitely a cricket convert now.

Before going to bet I took Nicky's advice and put some aftersun to cool in the fridge and then slapped it on my feet to stop them feeling hot during the night - fingers crossed!!
