Karma Karma Karma

Today we waited in for Costas the Aluminium Man to call in on his way to Latchi.  We have been contemplating having a fly-screen put at the front door but this is problematic because we have a piece of gutter downpipe which makes an ordinary opening door unsuitable - not least because we wouldn't be able to open it!!!  He was due at 10.30 but in typical Cypriot fashion arrived sometime after that but at least it was on the same day!!  He says there are a couple of options but if they prove to be too expensive we will shelve that idea as the cost may well outweigh the benefit.

Once he had been and gone we nipped over to Kathikas.  We had some liver offcuts for Lindy (Das and Belinda's dog).  We don't like disposing of it in our bin - particularly this time of year when it can start to smell quite quickly so are more than happy that their dog benefits from it.

As we were sat on their veranda having a cold drink John suddenly spotted a chameleon on their garden wall.  Incredible really as their house fronts the main road through the village so is hardly rural.  When spotted it had obviously come through the oleander bushes and was a bright vivid green which was easy to spot against the stonework.  When I got up to take its photograph the normally slow moving creature put a bit of a spurt on and retreated back into the bushes.

Belinda had never seen one before and at this point he was perfectly camouflaged but as soon as I could hear him moving I managed to locate him and gently picked him up and placed him on the ground so she could see him in all his glory.  He was a bit pissed off with me and spat and complained a bit but settled and in his new environment quickly changed colour.  John got him to walk up onto the broom handle and we took his photograph before putting him back into the oleander bush and safety.  At least there we hoped he would stay away from the road.

This afternoon I prepared our meal for this evening.  We had invited Les around for some supper as we know he is on his own and missing Clare who returned to Hong Kong and now does not know if or when she will be able to come back to the island.   We thought that a man from the Black Country would appreciate a good old curry and some freshly made naan breads so I delved into my Curry Frenzy box and selected Nuwabi Chicken which is a new one for us but was delicious.

Our evenings are back to some sort of normality so it was warm and dry and we were able to eat outside.  Les enjoyed the curry so much that we boxed up what was left and when I took him home I knew he had enough for another good meal.  I didn't realise that he didn't cook - I sort of assumed that he did - so I think he is struggling a bit without Clare and to make matters worse their house is o the edge of the second phase of the cobbling so access is difficult and sometimes impossible.  I was a bit worried about him walking back there in the dark so decided to hold off the wine and give him a lift so at least we knew he got back safely.

We had a visitor just as we were packing up - a beautiful hawk moth came to join us.  This is a Levant hawk moth or Theretra Alecto and is rather less impressive than the Oleander hawk moth (with its military camouflage colouring) that is until Levant flies and you get a glimpse of the stunning flash of pink which comes from the smaller set of wings which are hidden in my photograph.

It's been quite a week for wildlife what with the Nightjars and the chameleon and the hawk moth!!

I got Les home safely, I think it was a bit past his normal bed time when he did go home!!  He generally likes to get up when the sun rises and then call it a day when it gets dark.

Anyway I returned to clear up so that we could enjoy a lazy morning tomorrow.  In fact we have a lazy day planned before we meet up with Di and Rob who are off on a little mini-break up in the hills.  Thank goodness the grey and indifferent weather of the last couple of days has been replaced with more normal conditions for this time of year.
