We are so very lucky living where we do that we have such a wide range of eateries right on our doorstep - we really can chose from just about anything in terms of menu. We have still not quite recovered from the gold-plated fish we had the other week - that really came as something of a shock to us although having spoken to our friend Costas he was not surprised in the least by the cost of the Grouper - he is a regular fish eater and likes a bit of Grouper and says that this is what a good fish would cost because someone has to go out to sea and do battle and catch it unlike the Sea Bass and Sea Bream which is often farmed.

For a bit of what we might term 'fine-dining' we have always enjoyed a meal in the refurbished Finnikas Restaurant in Polis Square where the scallop with pastourma topping on a bed of white taramasalata is my favourite (although John substitutes the tara with houmous!) I had that for the first time when we ate here with Janet, Jacky and Stan and thought it was absolutely delicious.
The last couple of times I have been I have followed the scallops up with a light and refreshing salad of Duck with mango and caramelised nuts which again is delicious. That starter main combo is fabulous and afterwards I have no wish for a pudding - I am not really a pudding girl although I used to be!!!
Anyway my point is that we can go from a beautiful modern state of the art restaurant in Polis with fine dining and pretty little dishes and all that goes with it to a traditional taverna in Kathikas (which actually used to be the village shop) and have a full-on, no holds barred Sunday Souvla Special where our table is groaning with the weight of the food and our bellies likewise!!!
Today was the latter and we were meeting up with Sheila and Klaus to enjoy our Sunday lunch together. This picture was taken before the food arrived. All bar Mum opted for the Sunday Souvla Special and it was one of the hugest meals I have had in a very long time!!!! For 16 euros a head we had...
... half a loaf of village bread which was toasted, oiled and herbed along with normal bread and pittas. Salad, houmous, tsatsiki, taramasalata, tahini and olives. Halloumi and loukanika sausages, eggs and courgette, pilafi and meat balls, souvlaki and sheftalia, chicken and lamb souvla and massive roast potatoes followed by cake and fruit!!!
This is not a picture of our actual meal but not far off - I was so amazed by the quality and quantity of the food being brought that I didn't actually get to take a photograph!!!. It was lovely though and Sheila and Klaus seemed to really enjoy it - and took some home with them!!!
It is great to go out with them again after such a long time - it is also great to see how happy they are with their move to Goudi. Hopefully if things don't get locked down too much we will get to do something with them over the Christmas Period. In years past we have got together on Christmas Eve and it would be great to do so again.
It's nice for Mum to have some company other than just John and I too as there is more conversation flowing for her to get involved in and I have to thank her for paying for the meals - it was very kind.
All in all a very nice day even though I was suffering with a bout of neuralgia - the tablets kept it at bay but I was quite glad for an early night.
