Today was to be a full on day not least because Mum was celebrating her 86th Birthday and I was going down to meet her this afternoon for Afternoon Tea at Peggy's Secret Garden Cafe in Peyia along with Lilian and Sandy.
Before all this though I had my regular Tuesday morning walk with Nicky and this week I had chosen one of the trails at the Argaka Reservoir. I had hoped that this location might afford us some more shade then usual but sadly the terrible fire of a few years ago which ravaged the north side of the reservoir has laid huge swathes completely bare of any trees and it is going to be years before there is any real sign of recovery.
Having said that the resulting lunar landscape is, in itself, quite amazing and as we reached the higher levels of our walk we were cooled by a pleasant breeze which was most welcoming. This was somewhere that Nicky had not been before and although she told me I had mis-sold the shade aspect and she was right!!
It was a hot morning so we took our time and enjoyed our morning and I am now going to have to find a walk that really does offer some shade!!! I am thinking of possibly taking a trip out to Gialia and walking to the monastery in the forest.
I arrived first at Peggy's and tried several tables before the lady who I guess is 'Peggy' suggested we sit under the Gazebo which was a great choice as those who wanted sun had a little, those that didn't didn't and I didn't mind either way. I had not been here for ages and not had afternoon tea there so was impressed by the friendliness of the staff and the quality of the food.
The savoury choice was brought first and there was a separate platter for Mum and Sandy who were having the 'diabetic' selection.
Lilian and I were having the full fat version and very nice it was too. The pastries were really nice - particularly the sausage rolls which were warm and delicious.
There was a nice and quite unusual selection of sandwiches and wraps and the brie and caramelised onion were my particular favourite.
We were given plenty of time to chat and eat and digest before the tea/coffee arrived and you could have as much of that as you wanted.
Then came the sweet selection which was so lovely I forgot to take a photograph!!! There were scones with jam and cream, little individual Victoria sponges with jam and cream, lemon cake with lemon filling and chocolate brownies - I think that was it - I actually prefer the savoury course but the cakes were great and nicely presented. I didn't think we would be there that long but we managed to while away two hours!!! I think Mum enjoyed herself - I hope so and bless her she treated us all even though I had said I would pay for hers as her present.
All in all a very nice day. John had had a very taxing walk earlier with Liselotte so I think he was quite happy with some peace and quiet!
