Too Little Too Late

It is Sunday and we were up early getting things ready because Mum was coming for lunch and unusually I had nothing prepared - which I normally have!!  This was partly because I had in mind what we were going to eat and what we were going to eat didn't take long to cook.

Some time ago Mum had bought some lamb tenderloin from Kolios and it had been sitting in the freezer - this is an expensive cut of meat which needs to be treated with some care so that it is moist and tasty.  Mum gets it frozen and in the packet are five little tenderloins - the one in the photograph looks huge by comparison or maybe it is because the carrots look full sized and they are probably the tasty baby pickings when you thin out and which I used to love when I was little and Dad would give me them - they would be muddy but a cursory wipe on his gardening trousers and they were good to go!!!

I made a simple red wine gravy with some mint sauce and prepared some little new potatoes so that they would be roasted with onion and rosemary and was serving this with carrots (full sized) and minted peas.  There was the final Sainsbury's Apple Strudel in the freezer - they used to stock Sainsbury products but which recently have been like rocking horse poo.

Mum seemed very quiet today, not that she is very noisy at the best of times.  I think her back is playing her up and she is adamant that there is nothing that can be done so best not to push it.  She did seem to enjoy her meal though so that was good and I have to say I got the cooking of the lamb down to perfection as John and I don't mind how rare it is but Mum likes pink but no blood and that is exactly what she got.

We spent time in the Do-Jo after lunch - it was the nicest place to sit as the wind had got up - in fact we couldn't sit outside for lunch it was too windy and so it was easier to sit inside - that way the food at least did not get cold.  We were joined by Charlie - who was asleep on the old doormat under the day bed and Mr Boo who loves to sleep on the bed.  None of the cats seem themselves at the moment - we are hoping that it is down to the elevated temperatures we are experienso cing for May.  They are getting really picky about food which is very trying as Minnie and Boris really only like to eat pigs liver so if they go off that we are a bit snookered.

It was the end of what had been, for John, a very disappointing football season with his beloved Sheffield United bottom of the league and relegated and the departure of the 'Messiah' Manager Chris Wilder.  Still undaunted he settled down to the last game against Burnley and the first with supporters in the stands since Covid changed all that.  The Mighty Blades won - it was sadly too little too late but at least the season ended on a slightly more positive note.
