Today was a very different day for us because we were venturing out of our little corner of the island and going down to the big city of Paphos!!! We were even going to the tourist area of the Old Town and eating at a taverna on the edge of the old market that Lakis and Argy had been to last week. They had been and had a fish meze and really rated it so wanted us to go try it with them as they know we like fish although I am beginning to think that this is something that aggravates my hiatal hernia because the last few times I have eaten fish I have suffered afterwards. Anyway off we trotted on our voyage of discovery in the Kyriakides beloved Jooooooooook (Juke) like we were on a day trip on our holidays.
We parked a the 'sunken' carpark and went up in the original lift which is working again after many years of lying dormant. John and I would often go and spend time at the market when we came to visit Mum and Dad. We used to like to have a mooch about and visit John and Rula who ran a market stall selling tablecloths, linen and jewelry. The market has been subject to a lot of change over recent years and the last time I went I could no longer locate it so I am assuming they have stopped doing it. We also used to go and grab a drink and sometimes something to eat at Scorpios which was the first eatery on the strip which overlooks the sunken carpark. It was run by two brothers who were both renowned for being very good dancers. This is now called the Piedra All Day Cafe Lounge Bar and I have no idea if the guys are still there.
Our destination today was the recently refurbished Christos Grill & Seafood taverna which is about four or five along from Piedra. We felt very much like we were on holiday sitting in amongst all the tourists and looking out over the rooftops to the sea beyond. We all agreed to go for the fish meze but without mussels as none of us are keen.
This is a rare shot of John and I - thanks to Lakis for managing to capture us so we don't look complete munters! We are just about to embark on our piscatorial gastronomic journey which involved far too much food for a lunchtime or indeed any other time of the day!!! We started with salad and dips with olives and Greek pittas.
We then had, in no particular order, prawns with rice, snapper and sardines (we think), octopus, calamari, cuttlefish, chips, roasted vegetables and then a whole sea bream each which Lakis and I washed down with a nice bottle of white Vasilikon.
We none of us liked the cuttlefish much!!!! The calamari however was absolutely first class in my opinion as was the octopus. Anyway it was a lovely and different way to spend lunch.
Sad news though today - Mum was due out with Angela and Richard today but they had to cancel because their son-in-law died unexpectedly yesterday from a heart attack at 51. I had known his wife, Angela's daughter, Anita for many many years (I think about 40) - she has the Travel Agents in Coral Bay. Our thoughts are with her, her children, family and friends and anyone else who knew Petros.
