Shopping Day...

There is some unexpected colour in the garden at the moment. Suddenly two gladioli spikes have appeared under the lemon tree and the larger of them has burst into flower - beautiful shades of light and dark pink.  I will have to tie the spikes up because the flower heads are very heavy and they are in danger of being horizontal rather than vertical.

I was up early this morning to witness the bloom because (a) I was taking Mum to the cardiologist and (b) I was ringing to find out when my operation is going to take place.  I have a little more information - either the 11th or the 14th of July and I will be in for a couple of nights apparently.  The girl I spoke to couldn't tell me anymore than that.  I am not sure I even want to know!

My concern is that if I am out of action for long John is going to have to keep the garden tidy.  This is not his forte unless you like a scorched earth policy - I do the garden, John will lift and shift and dig but he isn't into plants and plantsmanship or is that plantswomanship.

I am hoping that I can get the garden tidied to a position where it will need the minimal amount of intervention from General Sherman and I plan to get up early tomorrow and start exactly that as we are going to lunch at Sheila and Klaus's midday.

My trip down to the big city started with Alpha Bank main branch.  When Mum and I opened a joint bank account after Dad passed away it was an account which needed only one of our signatures for anything but they named the account Moreen Tregunna and Jill Wiseman rather than and/or although behind the scenes it clearly states only one signature is required.  This caused problems last week at the Alpha branch on the Mesoghi Avenue.  They told me I needed to go and get it changed to prevent problems in the future.  The man I spoke to at the main branch said that was rubbish and they only needed to speak to him and he would put them straight.  I can't see that working so maybe on the day when I go and get mum's rent I will do so from the main branch which is a bit of a faff.  Anyway I went from there to the Neon Mall and Superhome Centre for a socket and some Yellow Dreamies because believe it or not that is the cheapest place to buy them - cheapest in the loosest possible sense of the word - rather the least expensive.  I don't know what they cost in the UK but here they are 1.69 for an 80g bag and Boris is really missing his Dreamies!  I also went into the clothes shop there and managed to pick up some shorts for John which were exactly what he was looking for and only 14 euros!

The nine minute trip from Mum's to the Consultant was fraught with difficulties as Google Maps took us down a street which was closed and dug up and then down another which was simple too narrow to allow two way traffic.  I had left in plenty of time and managed, rather by luck than judgment, to turn down a road which I was unfamiliar with which took me directly to the hospital.  Dr Ariadne is amazed by mum and her leaky valves.  She said that her kidneys, liver, cholesterol and various other blood test results were perfect and her ECG fine but her sugar LOW, sodium LOW, blood pressure LOW and she was too thin and needed to eat more which went down like a lead balloon as you can imagine so I had to get mum to agree to stock up with things which are generally higher in salt like beetroot and cottage cheese and to eat more than she normally does.   Time will tell whether this works.

The shorts were a big hit thank goodness - so much so that John wants some more!!!!  We nipped over to say our goodbyes to Sotiroula and Giorgos who are returning to Limassol tonight but will be back in a couple of weeks.  We then rustled up some pizzas from odds and sods that were in the fridge and sat outside on a lovely evening to take stock of where we are as the merry-go-round had slowed down everso slightly.

We have no idea if the work we have done to the pool has been successful and if not will raise a number of major and expensive questions so we have our fingers crossed.  As the sun went down John decided to swap out the dodgy PV inverter for a spare which Sotiris had given him.  We wont know until tomorrow if that has been successful.  He was helped by Charlie - or maybe Charlie was supervisor!
