It being Sunday and our early Boxing Day celebration Mum needed picking up from Emba so John had volunteered to go get her. I was in a complete state of panic because we had defrosted the pasties and something awful had happened to the pastry - it had disintegrated and was all sloppy and wet - I have no idea why and I hadn't slept all night wondering what I was going to do if I couldn't manage to salvage something edible out of them.
Kaye had wanted to go and buy some soap and I had arranged with Soteria to be at the shop at 10.00 not realising that she was actually opening it up especially for us. We purchased a few bits and pieces. The shop is actually a good addition to the village with some nice gifts at reasonable prices.
From there we decided to go and have a coffee out on the terrace at the Droushia Heights before I had to do battle with the less than satisfactory sloppy pasties.
It was really busy at the hotel and we were lucky to be able to grab a table out on the terrace in the beautiful sunshine. I had everything ready for our lunch but was not feeling very confident that either the pasties or the rather odd coloured dairy free creme brulee I had made were going to be edible.
To supplement the creme brulee I put some pears into poach and I shoved some of the Lidl mulled wine in the slow cooker and put on the Christmas Songs so that it looked and felt festive for Mum's arrival. It was so lovely and sunny out in the garden that we put her out there with a throw to keep her legs warm. I even put on the Christmas Apron she had got me last year!!!
I had managed to salvage the pasties by mopping up as much of the fluid as I could and getting them into the oven and flipping them so that I avoided any soggy bottoms. No-one wants a soggy bottom!!!
Eventually I managed to get the pasties cooked. They smelt divine but looked like a car crash and definitely would not have won any prizes. I was amazed I had managed to put anything on the table so was actually pretty pleased with the end result.
In the past Mum would have halved her pasty immediately but she tucked in and ate all of it, in fact everyone ate their pasty so I had four empty plates and everyone agreed that despite their appearance they were probably some of the tastiest I had made and for once we got a real flavour of pepper which is normally lacking that might just have been because I used ready milled pepper rather than freshly ground.
Panic over I had managed to feed everyone - now the next challenge was the pudding. We decided to have a break as Kaye had brought her Christmas presents with her and I had bought her a couple of things to open so we sat in the conservatory and did that.
So next came pudding. The odd coloured creme brulee looked and tasted fine once I had put on the sugar topping and managed to blow torch it sufficiently to go crispy. The poached pears were delicious as were the rather crumbly and chewy meringues made from the leftover egg whites. Needless to say Mum demolished the lot complete with a blanket of cream!!!
The last thing we did was play the present game - I had a few silly little presents for people and it helps to pass away half an hour or so. After this John took mum back home and I cleared up. Mum sayd she had had a lovely day and I really think she had.
