Today has been a bit of an off day...
I also learned today that I am neither use nor ornament for many of the DIY tasks that are remaining and it must do John's head in that I am either too short, too weak, too blind to help with most of the jobs. For that reason whilst John was finishing off the 'downstairs' loo I was detailed off to clean windows. Now I know that Vix has said that we mustn't feel under pressure to get jobs done before she and Trev come over but as I pointed out we dont have any doors on the toilets at the moment and even she had to admit that that was one job that needed to be completed - as she says "we are close - but not THAT close". You can see that this one now has a door and it almost finished all bar a bit of grouting round the splashback.
I will never make my living cleaning windows - I dont know how the lads that do Mum and Dad's do it so quickly and without leaving marks - I thought I had done a good job but it took me hours (but then I did do inside and out) and later on today when the Sun was lower in the sky could see what an absolute pig's ear I had made of it.
I eventually found one job that I could do - particulary as John still has his poorly arm - I got to do the sanding down of the shutters - yes folks that is me in charge of a power tool!!! Obviously I needed detailed instructions on its use and obviously I didnt do it quite to John's exacting standards but in the end we managed to get both sets of shutters for the guest bedroom sanded and stained and they look so much better for it. Just our room to go - not so easy as the window is over the swimming pool so getting the frame done will be interesting as the step ladder will have to go in the water.
...it started with a text message from Sally Allan informing us that they had had to say goodbye to their ginger-tom Chivers. Chivers was BC (before children) so was an integral part of their family unit for many years and when we lived two doors down from them in Glenthorne Avenue it adopted us and we thought it was a stray and we used to feed him little tit-bits until we realised that he was a just a scrounger!! Being great cat lovers ourselves we will know how difficult this will be for them but they still have Bruno the cat (so named because it has extra toes and paws like boxing gloves) and the mad puppy Buddie. It made me realise how much I miss my friends at times as a text message or email can be woefully inadequate - nothing can beat tea and sympathy.
...next we had a text message from Mum to tell us that her dear friend Thelma had passed away today, sadly in hospital and not at home with husband Frank. She was a real 'lady' old-school colonial who had lived for many many years in Kenya. Thelma had been poorly since a hip operation and I could kick myself because I said that I would go and visit her but didnt get round to it - lesson learned everyone - dont put things off because it might be too late.
It was the hottest day of the year so far - well into the 40s even up here so work was a hot and sweaty operation so probably not a bad thing that John got the outside shower completed by putting up two little shelves to hold shampoo/shower gel/soap etc. It's good to be able to strike that job off of the list and I think that John has made an excellent job of it.
We are knackered so tea and crap TV is the order of the evening. Day off tomorrow as Mum and Dad are coming for lunch and the afternoon.
