All creatures great and small...

Blimey what a busy day today!  We wanted to get around and see people, have coffees, do shopping, relax and then say our goodbyes to good friends who return to the UK at the weekend.  Scared we might be bored in retirement?  Absolutely no chance!!!

This morning John rescued the teeniest gecko from the swimming pool - poor little thing had gone in for an unexpected swim and was in danger of drowning so we were glad we got there in time and once dried out and with its breath back it soon scarpered away from the claws of the cats to live another day.  We then realised we have an equally minuscule pink house gecko living in our bedroom - he was running around on the wooden trim above the wood paneling and the minute John went to catch him he flattened himself and shot down the slimmest of gaps and out of reach.  I don't mind him being in the bedroom but he will be in danger of a close encounter of the feline kind and that doesn't bode well.

So we made our way slowly down to Polis stopping first at the Kyriakides to catch up with them and to have a coffee and a chat before checking the post and making sure that our request for a tailored meze at Finikas on Monday night had not got lost in translation - fortunately Andri was there so our beheaded and de-tailed fish request will be heeded so Laura need not panic about forming a bond with her supper!

We took post down to Rob and Di and ran the gauntlet of the two (or likely more) poo machines that are living in the Oleander bush just inside the front gate.  The 'fertilizer' is being produced by magnificent Oleander Moth Caterpillars whose fake blue 'eyes' give an impression that they are bigger and scarier than they really are!  I think they are fabulous as caterpillars and then even more fabulous when they morph into the adult hawk moth in all its camouflage splendour.

We declined coffee opting for a cold drink and sat outside to catch up on events.  Rob and Di have friends staying down the road from them and we have the Pamments so we are unlikely to socialise for a few days now but that's fine because we have the autumn/winter months to get fed up of one another.

We were pleased that the replacement presentation box for Bobster's special birthday present had arrived - the original one had been a bit poorly printed but the replacement was spot on.

We got our shopping - boy the heat had ramped up today so it was scorchio down in Polis so we were glad to escape and relax around the pool with Laura and Mark who are staying at the Akamas Spa in Droushia - it is busier than when they stayed last year but it had a nice atmosphere - we are so used to seeing empty that it makes a change to see some life there.  We are giving them a date night tonight as we are off to say goodbye to the Robsons.

We managed a bit of a chill out at home before our big night out.

This year we have a mega display of sea daffodils in the corner of the garden along with the long tall things that look a bit like fox lilies.  We rescued the bulbs of tall plant from the field next door when they ploughed up the vineyard.

The tin mugs John's mum sent are lovely but as John found to his cost the handles conduct the heat so they are a bit of a risk to those of us who drink black coffee and so we decided to turn them into planters and so last time I was passing a garden centre I splashed out 50 cents each on three basil plants!

So we had a late and touristic night out last night as we met up with The Robsons and their friends for dinner at Suite 48 down on the hotel strip in Paphos.  This place is about 4 times the size it was when we visited a couple of years ago but the lighting is no better although fortunately the menus are no longer black!  We arrived a bit early (surprise surprise) and sat at our table - I mentioned to John that this would have been Dad's idea of hell - less than ambient lighting, a flamboyant menu which was more style over substance and a speaker above our heads blasting out 'boom boom shake the room'!!!  We suddenly felt very old and firmly hicks from the sticks - still it is nice to be reminded every now and again what it feels like to be a tourist in Paphos!

The Robsons may not return next year - booooooooooo but it's understandable as Jo gets older and wants to do something other than a beach holiday - I am not so sure that Lynne agrees so we will wait and see what happens - in the meantime thank you for your company and safe journey home!
