Oh my God we must be crazy but we were up early this morning to embark on the final leg of our 'stoning' project and this week is tipped to be gripped by a heatwave with temperatures well into the 30s - our pool is 30 degrees for god's sake so I have no idea exactly what the air temperature reaches.
So John has decided that he is going to use up the remaining stone from the house walls and put a border along the wall between us and 11a where there was originally a sort of stippled finish. Originally he was only going to do the bit underneath the shutter and mirror but then realised he had more stone left over than he realised.
The run from the right of the mirror to the front door took John hours - it is laborious work and has wrecked his hands - so much so that the finger print recognition bit of his mobile phone no longer recognises his finger print.
Another project which John has undertaken was to do something with the wooden cross that used to be on Dad's grave. When they built the marble permanent surround we were given the cross upon which there was a plaque with his name, date of birth and date of death and a photograph and the cross was painted white. We couldn't bring ourselves to throw it away, that seemed wrong somehow so John decided to turn it into a planter for Mum which we sprayed black and I planted up with some succulents. Once they have got themselves established I will let Mum have it for her garden or verandah.
We have a vine in the garden which came from cuttings from a black grape we used to grow along the grotty old wooden fence at our married quarters in Greenwood Road. I think I bought it for next to nothing from Wilkinsons. It liked its position against the wooden fence and grew well so we took 6 cuttings which John protected by putting them into some pipe and took them across for Dad to look after. Dad managed to get two of them to survive and we then planted them into our garden in Droushia. We grow them primarily for the green and the shade and not the grapes which are small black and very sweet if we do get any. We had invited our neighbours round for a cuppa and a piece of cake this afternoon, although Lakis had other ideas and brought a bottle of rose with him! Anyway we offered Kia any of the vine leaves that she fancied for making Koupepia and she and Argy duly took advantage and harvested all that they thought would be good enough.
We had a lovely evening down at Di and Rob's where we sat outside until nearly midnight chatting and drinking and eating sausage rolls!!!! They have a beautiful area under a 'bandstand' which is tucked up into one corner of their garden with some lovely chunky and comfortable chairs. I was amazed that both John and I managed to stay awake bearing in mind we had been up working since just after 7.00am but we did which is a testament to their company! We managed to get home just before midnight - thank god that Cardiac Hill is at the beginning of the journey home!
