Real ale...

On what was quite possibly the hottest day of the year so far, and by hot I mean HOT as we are in the grips of a massive heatwave which is Mediterranean wide, we woke to not one, not two, not three but all four cats on the bed - WHAAAAAAT????? No wonder it felt like we had been sleeping in a sauna.  I think they have just missed us and with lots of changes going on our on the estate had sought refuge in the sanctuary that is our bedroom!!!

My Easter flowering cactus is in full bloom - actually it flowers several times a year starting at Easter - the buds start emerging slowly and then, if you are lucky or remember, they burst open spectacularly but only for one day.  Today was that day and I went up onto the roof terrace to photograph the display.  The cactus, a gift from my neighbour Galatia, receives no care or attention up there but clearly loves the conditions.  Accompanying the beautiful blooms is a heady fragrance which was being swirled around by the early morning breeze.

At Christmas, in the present game, John received a 'build your own spider robot' from Nicky and Mark - he duly constructed it, even improvising where there was a vital piece missing and created said creature.  Just to prove that nothing will stop Charlie from having his breakfast he set it going towards Charlie's bowl - undeterred Charlie continues to eat!!!

As a reward for all his hard work John was having the afternoon off and going for a drink in Kathikas and to watch the cricket - I was staying at home doing some gardening.  Wearing his Peaky Blinders T-Shirt Savvas took the opportunity to use him in a promotional shot for some of his gins on social media.  I would like to say John had gone viral and is now an international super-star but I fear that is not the case!!

I left John to it and returned home for an hour or so to my gardening.  The haircut of the lavender was put on hold as it was occupied by a sweet little preying mantis.  I love the lavender but by the time it gets to flower it has become far to big - I think I really should learn to cut it down more thoroughly after it has flowered to keep it under control.  Pruning is a hard lesson in gardening I think - I get a shrub to exactly the size I want and then I keep having to cut it back and then I miss out on the flowers or I let it flower and then it becomes too big!

As I didn't have Art this week we thought we would leave our visit to the cemetery until mid-week as Mum had been on Sunday.  The flowers that we chose to go unto the trough at the bottom are looking absolutely glorious and are obviously the right choice for the Summer as they clearly enjoy the sunshine, opening up for the day and then closing the blooms back up again in the evening and overnight.

Most of the plants that we rescued from the grave are still surviving - in fact the chrysanthemum which Joyce and David got last year I cut back and left in the pot and it has come back strong and healthy which is good - hopefully it will flower again this year.

The road to the village, whilst still impassable by car is much tidier than it has been so John took the opportunity to walk up and check the post which was good because I had had a delivery from Amazon which was the mattress covers for the mattress which is outside on the daybed.  I hope that they will prevent it from becoming mouldy with the condensation we generally get at night.

On that subject, the daybed has become a very welcome addition to the garden as we now use that space in the evening when we never used to before.  The addition of the curtains means that we can block out the searingly hot sun (even as it is going down) and sit in comfort.  John's recent raid on the bottles of real ale at Grande meant that he could enjoy an Old Golden Hen and me a Banana Bread Beer.  STOP PRESS - John learned that Savvas is now selling bottled ale at the Gin Bar and at a reasonable price - things are most definitely looking up!!!
