We remembered that we had to go and rescue Kenny this morning - normally we walk out to the road and wonder where the car is!!! We went across to Kathikas to get him and then dropped him back down to Polis so that JJ&S could go out for the day, which they did. In fact they took a drive out for lunch and sat by the sea at the Fly Again making the most of their last full day on the island.
The temperature ramped up today - when we got into the car having called in to get a few bits in Paps it was showing 41 degrees which is hot by anyone's standards. We appreciate the car had been sitting in the sun for a while but even as we made our way up the hill to Droushia the temperature didn't drop much and it was in the mid 30s - we had planned to do some DIY but that went out the window - it was just too draining to contemplate.
The most energetic we managed to get was to go and find the horse who has been moved into the field behind our house. Here she has shade and water on tap which makes it easier if her bucket is empty. John had got some cucumbers and carrots for her and he moved the water closer as she had got all tangled up with her rope. Bless her she comes bounding over and gives him a nice slobbery head butt usually with a mouth full of mashed up cucumber for good measure.
This evening JJ&S had chosen to go to the newly refurbished Finikas restaurant in Polis. The refurbishment has taken a very long time but it has been worth it because the venue is now sleek and stylish with an interesting mix of old and new. You never used to be able to see the main building with its archways on the first floor and there is a fascinating vestibule which houses some very very old pieces of traditional furniture.

One of the interesting additions are the water features which add a different dimension to the ambiance.
The food is now more fine dining than it used to be so there are some very interesting things to chose from.
I went for scallops as a starter - they were in a pastourma crust and on a bed of white taramasalata. Scallops are expensive here so this was a bit of a one-off as it was a special meal to celebrate what we think has been a brilliant holiday for JJ&S. I can confirm that the scallops were delicious. My main course was a chicken dish on quinoa with lots of lovely flavours including mango. Stan and John went for steak - unusual for John because he usually reckons that no-one cooks it as good as I do but they both said their fillet steaks were superb. Janet went for rack of lamb which she thoroughly enjoyed and Jacky had stuffed vine leaves which suited her wish for something traditional and vegetarian.
It is pretty hard to believe you are sitting in Polis when you are here - it felt so much more cosmopolitan than the old place!!
Anyway we had a lovely meal. This is somewhere we would go for special occasions because it is rather more expensive than the places we normally eat.
Our waitress Maggie was fabulous and after we had eaten and taken a walk into the square and had a drink at Kings Cafe we returned to Finikas to see if we (John and I) could get a taxi back to Droushia. Maggie ushered us to a table and insisted we couldn't sit at an empty table so brought us a brandy each whilst we waited.
Our Nissos taxi turned up in about 5 minutes with a lovely driver who got us home safe and sound and for the bargain price of 15 euros. It had been a lovely evening - we cannot believe that JJ&A have come to the end of three weeks but we know they will be back again next year - in fact their itinerary is just about complete!!
