We have offered our services for getting shopping for anyone in the village who can't, or doesn't want, to go to Polis or Paphos (if that is where we are heading) at least whilst we are still allowed to go out and about although currently this seems to be under review.
Anyway love or hate social media but on occasions like this it seems to be the perfect vehicle for getting information across - having posted our willingness to help in our community I was contacted by Iris who has a holiday home in the village but lives in Nicosia - she has English neighbours who live opposite her house in Droushia. The man (David) was due a stent operation on Monday which has been cancelled and his wife (Isobel) has only one lung and they don't know anyone in the village so Iris asked if she could give them our number. Well of course she could and Isobel rang straight away so now we are in contact and I was able to give her as much information as I could about the village and the Government incentive set up to help vulnerable people if this lock-down situation gets more severe and goes on for some time. John had gone to the post office to check for any last mail coming in before the Post Office shuts and had picked up post for them which he delivered. We also got a shopping list for Phillippos and his family and a request for some milk and bread for Di's neighbour Judi. I would like to think that if it came to it someone would do the same for my Mum - in fact Nicky and Mark have offered so I know that she will be ok but I am more worried that she is going to be bored and then get a bit depressed by having to be in all the time with only Freddo for company. If Freddo would be ok with our cats and if we could keep him in we would have Mum up to stay but that isn't practical so we are going to have to take each day as it comes. I have decided that rather than text to keep in touch we will start each day with a phone call or video call so she gets to see our ugly mugs!!
To lighten the mood I am posting a picture of the sea and I hope that the next time I am able to do so it will be full of happy, healthy holiday-makers enjoying this beautiful island.
I can confirm that eventually Jane and John managed to return home today. They accepted an offer of an early morning trip to the airport where they decided to sit it out and hope they could get on one of the last remaining flights back to the UK - they didn't mind where and they are lucky that they could afford whatever extortionate amount was being asked for the tickets. We eventually got a call from Jane to say they were in the departure lounge and heading for Liverpool - their car is at Bristol airport!! They have a great friend Mike who is travelling from the West Country to Liverpool to rescue them - good man. Shortly after their departure EasyJet announced they were providing some rescue flights but only a couple from Paphos and the others from Larnaca and only for those whose flights had been cancelled - Jane and John's is still showing as valid even though there is absolutely no chance of it flying. I know this has been a nightmare for them both and we really feel for them.
