Another no-cook Friday...

We are nearing the end of what has been a very difficult and emotional week.  The island has been issuing warnings about extreme temperatures over the weekend so this morning we decided to get up early and get on with a few jobs - it keeps us focused.

I am not known for being organised and tidy but today I excelled myself.  The washing dries in a nano-second and can get a bit crispy so instead of hanging on the line I got out the airer and positioned it in the shade of the woodstore and hung everything out in military fashion.

John was very proud of me and approved of the drying arrangements - the only problem is that all this washing means all that ironing and it is just too hot for ironing at the moment - although John would say at any time for me because I am not a lover of that particular household chore.

I was busy tidying the house whilst John had togged himself up like a Ninja and had gone over in the field to tackle the bramble that resides there and which creeps towards us and then appears in the garden.

There was a self seeded hollyhock in the field - John wanted to try and dig it up and relocate it in our garden but I told him that it would be very difficult to move - you need to gently extricate the tap root and that wasn't going to be easy with the soil baked hard by the sun.  I can see why he wanted to try and save it as it is the most fabulous cerise pink colour.

We wanted to go and water at the cemetery and check to see if we had any post as we are waiting for a parcel from John's sister but the post is really haywire at the moment so we may have a long wait.  It was hot walking into the village.  The horse has returned and is in the field opposite the Skrimmers - it seemed to have plenty of water but very little shade.  All in all though she looks in good condition and we think she may be pregnant.

The art challenge this week is 'Flowers' and I have been snapping all sorts but have not yet decided which ones to enter.

My eye was caught by a fabulous Artichoke which was in flower.  The vibrant purple is amazing and fortunately the field is dry and the grass/weeds flattened so I could walk across without fear of encountering a slumbering snake.  We have seen several black whip snakes recently and, according to Rachel at the Gin Bar, they are currently getting jiggy jiggy to make babies - or at least that is what her little boy informed her!!!

As I was taking my photograph I noticed that the tree behind was covered in small fruits.  I believe they are cherry plums and no-one comes to that field so we decided that we would do some 'cutting' as Argy would say.

Not sure they are entirely ripe as yet as the first one I tried was rather tart but with the weather as it is they will ripen in no time.

I can't believe I haven't noticed that tree before because it will always have been there - I am guessing that something else has been taken down so it is rather more exposed than it used to be.

It was exceptionally hot walking to the cemetery and it is very open and exposed there so we didn't stop long, just long enough to water Dad's flowers and Davids.

We walked up through the village so we could have a look at the progress of the cobbling.  We managed to talk up as far as Christos's Taverna but couldn't continue on the main road and had to shoot up the side (near where Les and Clare live) and around the back which is quite a mess - there still looks like there are months and months of work left to do.  You have to feel so sorry for the businesses who have had the stuffing knocked out of them by the works and the restrictions imposed by the virus.  Even though things are relaxing and some tourists are beginning to trickle in they cannot get around the village so are unlikely to want to stay there particularly as their peace will be shattered by the machinery.

It is Friday and I don't cook on Friday so I am eternally grateful to Savvas and Rachel and Valentina at the Gin Bar in Kathikas for their Friday night specials.  Fish and chips again this evening and it was lovely.  It was good to catch up with Di and Rob - we haven't really seen them since we were at the Gin Bar last Friday.  Big thanks to Di for driving this evening.
