The arrival of December has blessed us with really very lovely weather even in Droushia where, after we had removed the last vestiges of the overnight condensation, we were able to have breakfast outside again. The weather looks to remain pretty good until the day Kaye leaves and then all we can see is back to back days of rain. I don't care I just wanted it dry for Kaye's visit as it makes everything so much easier.
Today Kaye was going down to take Mum for lunch leaving me free to get our evening meal ready and to do some things around the house. She has been an easy visitor so far but having another person in the house means changes to our routine and inevitably things like cleaning take a back seat.
My sister does not eat dairy - this has given me a bit of a challenge in that she announced that she loved creme brulee but had not been able to eat one for years - I had found a recipe which made it with coconut milk and so I planned to give it a go for a pudding choice on Sunday when we are having an early Boxing Day celebration with Mum complete with pasties and mulled wine.
My second challenge for the day was a lack of brandy for the coq au vin I had planned for our evening meal so it turned into Κοτόπουλο με ζιβανία (chicken with zivania) as it was the only spirit I could find that I thought would suitably combust!!!
My sister had managed to spot mulled wine in Lidl so I had grabbed several bottles, I will augment it with more alcohol and spices when I get it ready for Sunday. There will be a couple of bottles or three left over for Christmas proper if anyone drinks it - always good to have in at this time of year.So I successfully got all the food I wanted prepared, prepared and am pleased to report that the creme brulee looked to be ok. I had made an extra one which I gave John to taste for me. The jury was out as it wasn't the flavour he had been expecting but the texture and everything was as you would expect and well, to be honest, if you don't eat dairy then you have to expect that a fundamentally dairy product isn't going to be the same with a substitute.
Kaye returned home, she had taken Mum to Tala Amphitheatre cafe for lunch and got her to sit outside which is way out of mum's comfort zone but I think that mum is just a bit too scared to say no to Kaye - I on the other hand would be made to boil alive in the conservatory area!!!
We had our meal which was actually delicious despite the alcohol substitution and decided that a quiet evening with a Christmas film was in order - Kaye had not seen Last Christmas so we watched that again (thank you Laura for the introduction) and it was just right for the mood of the evening.
Tomorrow I am going for a walk with Kaye, taking her tat shopping in Jumbos and then having a takeaway with Mum.
